JB, I believe you mentioned a Knipex cutter in one of your posts. Was this an 8" boltcutter?<br />I was thinking of giving one as a gift, and wanted your (or anyone else's) opinion. <br /><br />I was thinking this would make a great hook cutter, for both emergency and fish release use.<br />Is it handy enough to use "one handed"?<br /><br />I found them for $29. Good price?<br />I also found some cheaper ones, but I recognized the brand Knipex name.<br /><br />Anyone else have an opinion?

I don't think it was me, Roscoe, though I might have mentioned that a powerful one-hand cutter is something a musky fisherman or a salt water fisherman should have in the box.<br /><br />Cutting the hook or steel leader is sometimes the best way to release a strong fish that is well hooked. Ordinary dikes wont do the job.<br /><br />I think this should be in the Non-Boating Topics. I will move it there.<br /><br />Good luck.

Ok, maybe it was something I read in Esox Angler magazine, or in another post.<br /><br />Snap-On also makes a nice one, but its $75.

Sorry no help here, would seem like a good idea but all I carry is a side cutter on my boat. But I can imagine a good cutter to be invaluable should the need arise. Heck I don't even have a bolt cutter in the shop arseanal yet, but then again there are a lot of things I don't have...YET

Bass Pro shops/offshore angler has a nice hook/cable cutter.. Might be worth a look-see...

Checked out about 20 sites tonight.<br />Decided on the Knipex. The second one on this page.<br /> http://www.crawfordtool.com/cutters.html <br /><br />Found it cheaper at a few places, but posted this link because it shows a couple different models.<br /><br />Thetoolwarehouse.com has them for $29.<br />And MagLite flashlights real cheap.<br />They have the big 5 battery model for $20.

be careful of bolt cutters if you are going to cut steel leaders.most will not do a very good job.if you look at the jaws when closed there will be a small gap.go to lowes in the tool section find the channel lock tools,find the end cutters 8" with the blue handles.they will work on steel leaders and most hooks.

thanks carp king.<br />He has a cutter for wire leaders and such. But wanted to get him something with a little more leverage for one handed cutting of big treble hooks.

Roscoe, I've got a pair of the 8" without the spring that I use to cut stranded Stainless steel aicraft cable with down to 1/16", 9-strand. I would think they would do a good job on a treble hook.

hi roscoe..that knipex bolt cutter cuts 4mm stainless rods 1hands easy....used them on welingwires at work for years...just keep it well lubed at sea because of rust...
