Here's the scoop; working on a 1983 80 HP merc with excellent compression @ 120 psi each cylinder. Have already replaced the check valves in the fuel pump and measured the vacuum at idle; it is 1-2inches of mercury. No air bubbles or anything that would stand out. We then replaced the fuel pump inlet cover; old one was plastic, new one is aluminum. No change in idling condition. Diaphragm originally equipped without a spring and plastic puck on the check valve retainer. New kit converts this pump to a spring and puck style check valve retainer. Have drawn a fuel sample, checked everything else that could impede idling characteristics and have come to the conclusion that although a problem exists, it is not related to the fuel system.
