JB Weld Repair

Hey guys!<br />This pic is of the interior valley area on the port side of a OMC Cobra 4.3L engine . It is a 1989.<br />There is no water in the oil. I believe it froze last winter.<br />My question is this; Does this look like a repair for JB Weld? Also how much preasure is there in the cooling system in an average 4.3L motor?<br />Thanks for any help!<br /><br />

we sure see this a lot here in colorado. i've used jb for MANY freeze repairs with great results. saves my customers a few bucks and hasnt let me down yet. using a dremel tool, grind the crack into a v and clean it real good before putting on the epoxy. good luck.

Hi Red! I would get a new block. even if you put JB on it will not last over time the water will seep ito the oil. and another thing what you see is a crack in the water jacket but there might be damage to your cyl inter wall. A 4.3 bare block cost a lot less than a complet rebuild just ask me i pick my 5.0 motor up from the mach shop this week $700.in mach work and $300. in rebuild kit. im lucky i can assemble myself or theres another 200 to 300. all from water intrution from a bad razer and man. If the rest of the motor is good i would get a new block, if the parts are junk if you patch it it might last a couple times out (MABEY) I new a guy that patched a 4cyl merc on the outside of the block he ground it real good cleaned it real good and it only lasted 2 hours and it was blowing water into the boat and he almost sank it because his bilge pump quit. I dont mean to discurage your Quik fix i realy do think you would be going bacwards and you all ready got it half way tore down now I would go the rest of the way. Good luck to ya and God bless !! That isn't necessarily a cracked area. It looks like JB weld was used to resurface the area. I really don't think this is serious enough for you to start spending that kind of cash. I have my exhaust manifold welded with JB weld for some time now. It is holding very well with no leaks.<br /><br />If you regularly check your oil before every time out, which is a good thing to do anyway, I wouldn't be concerned. Should you see milky oil, that's a different story.

red ranger, no i dont work at outboard, just by my parts there. i've been working out of my driveway for quite a few years.none of the boat shops here will touch anything older than ten years(8 years in the summer busy season). outboard actually refers older boats to me.

You have it that far apart....I know it's June, but if you get a truck block and swap it, the piece of mind will be worth it I think....

The hard part is surface prep. You have to get all the oil out or it won't stick. That's about impossible with cast metals without really radical steps that make replacement just as viable and certainly more reliable. I do it when the crack involves water jackets, but I won't even attempt a surface bathed with oil anymore.

Maybe cook the prep area with torch,& clean with brake cleaner?(fire extinguisher)

i dont know but, that looks like a healthy crack! youll have to take the head off to put the torch to it. that big of a crack theres goin to be warpage with the amount of heat needed to burn the oil out. do it cheap now and do it again soon, or just do it right. that is if the crack behind the rods is what were talkin bout here. by the looks of that oil sittin in there its time to do something with the bearings anyways. i mean look at the poor thing. that setup is toast! something else is GOING to fail. oh! nothing like having grinding dust get in the bearings after the prep!!!!!

It's just another one of those "No problem I can fix it real cheap" type posts. <br />Problem is, they leave off the last part "If my cheap fix doesn't work, NO PROBLEM, someone else can ruin there day on the water to tow my cheap azz back to the dock"

I make a living on people that choose to pay later rather than repair it correctly now. Later always cost more. Sunday being fathers Day, I'm going to take a second and give thanks to my deceased father for teaching me how to repair engines. Son, if you aren't willing to repair the problem correctly, go read a book instead. Start your own half-azz forum if you like. My vote is for Don speaking his mind. He has Never suggested half azzed solutions and he correct, you're gonna con some innocent boater, waste his and his family's time together, to get a tow. But, I know, you could care less.
