well went to change oil in bottom end of 66 40 hp evinrude and it was milky brown and I found the crack. I didn't see this before but it's there now. so it seems to run well. The issue I have is curently I'm out of work funds are limited . I don't know of anyone in my area (Delhi ON) that can weld this at this point. I know of people using JB Weld on old VW cases with great results. I was wondering what the thoughts here are on this for a patch until the fall when I can get it done correctly. I do want to get out and try this baby out it is so close.

Heck yes, that's good stuff. go ahead and use it. Just keep an eye on the repair and get it welded when you can.

Where is that crack, in the gear case? What caused it?
Hard to tell with no scale in photos. JB might hold back some water intrusion, but don't expect much structural strength. If internal forces caused the crack, it will likely crack again. Fix the cause.

Use the regular type of JB Weld, NOT the quick set.

It takes longer to cure, but holds very well..........

When you are ready TIG weld with argon. If you need advice on welders in your area let me know.

Been chopping rocks with your lower unit? That's a mess and needs welding, not glue. It's not a superficial "crack" and clearances may be compromised whatever you do. I'd be looking for a replacement LU. Try any of these or Ebay:

I agree with wilde it need to be welded or replaced. Ive not had very much luck with even welding them. Tolerances are tight in the gear case and any slop could cause a catastrophic failure.

Re: jb weld to fix crack in bottom end

the motor was bought used and it's my thought the crack was there and I missed it

I have curently done The JB weld repair as I'm still trying to get it all together to work .

this is also a selectric motor so it could be hard to find a bottom end

mind you I could bolt onto a manual and save some possible future issues

2.5 to 3" long
I think it was left with water in it and it froze
