Re: Jeep Fever

I drive an 06 jeep wrangler regularly, it takes me to work daily, which working in construction in Florida i have to go out into some rough country (when there's work but that's a different topic for a different day). Its pulled my boss's f150 4x2 out many times, but its hard to throw a bunch of tools in then go to the store and pick up a few sheets of plywood or sheet rock or even just lumber without taking the top off. It has been on some longer hauls, weekend trips to Tampa-2 hours on 75 one way, and i have gone to Tallahassee in it, which was like 6 hours highway one way, but I'm 19 instead of putting up with the noise and hard ride, i still enjoy it. Overall, i love the thing and yes do the jeep wave. Also Ive heard every mechanical system is "bullet proof" but being relatively new, and with only 35000 on the odo, its hard to determine.

They are bullet proof in stock form even to a point. PM me and I will send you some pics of things I have broken.

I will always own a jeep It was my first vehicle, and it has been very reliable while it was stock. They are the best entry level for off roading and the options are limitless for upgrades if you chose to.

Re: Jeep Fever

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm leaning toward an 04,05, or 06 unlimited. I get the extra wheel base along with a little more room. The new 4 door unlimiteds and have a lot of options/more room, but the only year I could probably afford are the 07s & I'm very weary of buying a first year redesign. Plus I think the previous Unlimiteds may have more long term value since they were produced for a shorter period. I like the idea of a 4 door Wrangler, but something just doesn't look right with them.

The question is pretty open ended. First, what are you pulling? Second, what do you plan to do with the Jeep? just drive it to work and pull your boat? Third, you ever going to need to take more than one other person with you anywhere? 4th, do you want a "jeep" or do you specifically want a wrangler? That would rule out all the larger ones - ZJ, XJ, SJs (older fullsizes). ALL the wranglers are very narrow inside relative to the XJ and ZJ. I can get away with fitting 3 real adults in the back of my XJ, not so much in a JK.

I've had a couple jeeps, currently a '97 XJ on 35s, Dad has a '99 TJ, brother a '98 ZJ. Mines pretty crappy for towing now since its too tall now. Was a little soft for anything on the bigger end before my lift. The TJ's wheel base is too short to feel good towing anything over 16', the ZJ is great for towing being the biggest of the bunch with a nice V8. Its still no 3/4 ton truck though.

The drivetrain of the 2007 Jeeps is much better than that of the older jeeps. Any of them. They are wider and longer than other wronglers overall as well. The 2007+ (JKs) unlimiteds are the longest of the bunch (better towing, more room), followed by the zj, XJ, TJ unlimiteds, then the regular old wranglers. The TJ unlimited is really only longer in wheelbase and interior storage. Seating is still crap in the back seat.

Re: Jeep Fever

After months of looking & test driving numerous Jeeps + other makes & models I picked this up on Saturday....

It's a 2001 Sport with just about every option the Sahara comes with. No rust, clean inside & out. A few minor things that need to be addressed, but I'm happy. I bought it from an older fella who took great care of it. Best part is that it's paid for.

Re: Jeep Fever

Congrats.

I didn't have the fever, but was starting to get the itch. My Jeep has been sitting on my carport for 3 months due to salt on the roads. It finally rained a couple of days ago, so I drove it to work the past 2 nights.....Yeah, I don't drive it in the snow. It is 21 years old and has never been in the salt. I fought the rust battle on a CJ 20 years ago and vowed to never do it again.

Re: Jeep Fever

much like you I wanted one for many years (25 actually). I had gotten to drive one in the Army and fell in love with it's off road capabilities. Had wanted one as a kid etc.

everytime I looked at them though as a vehicle, I needed something to tow with and haul with and bring people with.......

well then came a chance, my truck had been paid off for awhile and was still running good and looking nice. (the point where sane people don't even think about looking at cars) I sold a few toys. my kid was graduating from high school and would no longer need to be hauled around with his friends to every sport event you could think of.
i started to look for an abused jeep to rebuild. wow talk about sticker shock. decided to just go get a new one. so I ordered an '08 Wrangler X.
It was supposed to be my toy. Still gonna drive my truck every day for general commuting and what not. Yeah right, the little Jeep is awesome fun. I have a 50 mile one way daily commute and love it. Now of course the newer ones have V6 engines and slightly larger chassis, Makes for a very nice freeway ride considering. Yeah the soft top gets a little loud but you get used to it. Love riding around with the top down and sometimes the doors off.
I still wouldn't be happy with only owning the Jeep. I wouldn't want to haul a trailer with it, or people for very long. Buying groceries with it brings new meaning to creative packing, and purchasing anything larger then a bag of dog food may require a small cargo trailer.
That said, now that I've had it for a little over two years, I wouldn't consider getting rid of it. Only problem I've had in 50,000 miles is a rear axle seal went out. They fixed it under warranty.
I will say I've thought about the lift and tires and..........but then it just wouldn't be as useful for a daily driver. think it's going to stay pretty stock for some time so I can just keep driving it.
Like above I wouldn't do a long road trip in it, although I have toyed with the idea of going out to Colo to visit my older son. would love to do some trail rides out there.

funny that was my original intention. NO SALT, then after ordering it in Sept in Wis. I told the dealer yeah should be no problem to get it here and drive a little before the snow comes. well a couple months go by, no Jeep. Then in early Feb I get a build date. ok no prob, Feb is decent here sometimes. Still salt on the road but we'll wash it. The day we go to pick it up there is essentially a blizzard. the dealer takes it out in the crap for a test drive to ensure it's ready. I thought about leaving it and coming back but once it snows like that they put so much salt out it'll be there for weeks.
Worst part of all was my son had come along to pick it up. He was going to drive my truck home for me. Yeah there is no feeling in the world like seeing your kid and your truck sideways on a two way road with a car coming his way. He managed to recover and then amazingly he asked if we could leave the truck somewhere and he would ride with me.

well yes and no. first anything before Chrysler would be 24 years old so you'll be rebuilding it. plus they were not able to go over 75MPH and they had that whole roll over thing going. No heat, very loud, very rough, minimal stereo.
don't get me wrong I love old CJ's but I wouldn't consider one for a daily driver on a long commute.
Chrysler versions are wider, longer, smoother, more articulation in the axles with removable pins, more wheel clearance, more reliable, more parts availability, and the best part is they are still straight axle, removable top, and very capable 4X4's.

now which one is cooler -- of course the old CJ or even better would be a flat fender willys.
