hello, question i have a 1994 grand cherokee jeep had trans mission rebuilt last fall (automatic) the overdrive lite would kick in an the tranmission pop out of over drive, took it back to the transmission guy who rebuilt it, he disconnected transmission oil cooler line to radiator and hooked up a external tranmission oil cooler. this is not tied into the radiator like it should be, apprently the oil cooler on radiator clogged, so its just running off trans cooler. question is this sufficent cooling for the transmission, the transmission works fine now, thanks for any replies.

Depends on what you are doing with it.
If you tow a lot, it might not be.

Best thing to do is take the rad off and take and have it boiled out and then hook the tranny back up to it.

Nothing beats OEM.
You can also leave the external one on and just pipe into it and have 2 coolers if you want.

Got to keep the Jeep trannys cool. That is the death of them, heat.

My opinion about factory coolers in the radiator is that they ar more heaters than coolers. You will be fine, and maybe better off leaving it like it is. There is a lot more cooling surface in the aftermarket cooler.

I am with Lubedude - in most cases an aftermarket cooler will provide much more cooling than the one built in to the radiator. It is very common in the south to bypass the smaller built in cooler when installing an external cooler. I bypassed mine at the recommendation of a trusted trans shop about 60,000 miles ago. Not sure if this would apply to colder regions.

Two trains of thought.
To plumb both coolers is more hardware, hose and complexity. Adding the chance of more failure and leaks.
And yet adding another heat source (cooler)in front of the radiator and condensor simply has the original effect on the cooling system.

Personally, I'll take all I can get in dumping heat. I use both coolers.
180-190 degree coolant, engine oil and ATF are all normal operating temps.
