So my dad and I are fishing today out in the bay and some birds start working so I start casting around a lure. Just as I make a cast and start reeling a boat load of old farts comes plowing along and drives right over my line. Snagged it of course. I start waving and yelling but they just wave back completely oblivious. So I cranked down and snapped the line, losing my brand new freaking lure. With any luck the 50 yards of line I lost is cutting it's way into his lower unit seals. Some people are just idiots. Guy has the entire bay and has to cut close enough to me to snag a line I casted out.

Re: Jerks

Bigger the boat, bigger the jerk. I have so many stories similar to yours. Last weekend I was fishing with 3 other guys in my fathers 18ft Manatee. I see this 32 ft Topaz flybridge coming through the channel where I and about 15 other boats are fishing. This guy must have been doing 30mph with the boat dragging half the ocean with him. There he was up in his flybridge making no attempt to slow down as he proceded to swamp every boat he passed. Its either that people don't think or they just don't care.

Unforunately lakes are not the only places loaded with jerks, way too many of them around south Florida waters that think that because they have a bigger yacht they own the ocean.

Re: Jerks

Could be, DJ. My dad taught me when I was a little kid to look around before I did anything at all, including stopping in the grocery store.<br /><br />He said to me, "Son, to you, you're the most important person on the planet. Trouble is, most people don't see it that way. Look around and see if what you're about to do is going to inconvenience someone else. If it is, either don't do it or find another way to do it."<br /><br />His advice has always seemed to work, no matter where I was or what I was doing. It sure as heck works on the water.<br /><br />Yeah, I want to get to the next fishing hole just as fast as I can. But that doesn't mean I get to run over someone else's fishing hole on my way.<br /><br />It's that old Golden Rule again.

Re: Jerks

i have a friend with temper issues, glad he's a friend!<br /><br />he goes by the beer can rule...if you're so close that he can nail you with a beer can, then you were too close. i've been out with him when boats got close, good thing he was more thirsty than irritated.<br /><br />i've never seen him really throw one, that would be a waste of a good beer!!

Power boats, jet ski's, and yes even once a paddle boat, have caused problems when fishing. Stupid people are stupid people no matter what they are in or where they are. Guess thats why " As we forgive those who trespass against us" is as relevant today as ever.

I used to just fire bait at them with my bait catapult. People soon learn to keep away when bits of dead fish or ragworm start hitting them.<br /><br />Lets face it, no-one's going to stand up in court and complain about being assaulted with a fish head...

Re: Jerks

I have had problems with jetskis in the past - my answer is to tie on a 5 once sinker and start casting .<br />Pepole can be rude and sometimes I overlook it as just not knowing or not realizeing they are being a problem.<br />You ever notice the nicer the boat the less the captian knows?

Re: Jerks

I agree thats its rude to go too close to someone while their fishing, but sometimes its the fishermen who cause the prolbems as well.<br /><br />Last weekend I was coming out of a set of locks, there is just no where to go but straght out, everones idles threw and keeps moving. I'm the first boat out. These guys are tied up the the outside of the lock station, fishing, in a little 14'? They have lines out right where the dock door opens. There was no where to go but over their line, i wasn't shoving it in reverse with a 40footer ideling up my ***. After I ran over the line, these jerks even had the balls to yell at me, they where drunk and standing in the boat yelling like idiots. It was at the end of a real good day in the water, and I had a girl who had never been out before, and was uneasy about being out on the water. If it hadn't been for that I would have swamped those jerks!

Re: Jerks

i used to have problems with a couple of jetskis at the river when i was fishing but one day i had about 40 feet of rope that i did not notice fall out of the boat trailing behind me as i trolled around. the jet ski's would come in close and try and swampo me or spray me and one came in to close and sucked most of the rope up and died right there :) i think he was a bit scared cause he jumped off and swam to his buddy and they both took off leaving me a nice jet LOL keep that the dock for a few hours till there dad came along and wanted to know what happened and he got the full story from me and some others and he gave me the jet ski and a few weeks later sold it for some good cash

Re: Jerks

Was fising in the Salmon river couple of years back. Do not recoment this if you are clastriphobic as the people were literaly elbow to elbow. I had found a spot allong with dozzens of others where a scour hole was collecting the salmon. Most were getting decent action till the "charter boats" - big row boats with "tour guides" @$200 or more clams /day coasted down strean and then DROPPED ANCHOR directly over the hole. Holy mother - I darn near let him have a bit of use scoal - was only about 10' away. People said stuff to them, but nobody owns the water - thats just people. CATransplant - love the advice of your pop - think I'l borrow it for my own kids.

Re: Jerks

A few years ago, I was fishing for sockeye on the Chilkoot River near Haines, Alaska, with my dad and others in my family.<br /><br />It's crowded on the river there most of the time, and everyone's fishing the same area, so a pattern is established. Each fisherman cast in turn, then began the retrieve. The next fisherman downriver then cast, and so on. It worked really well, and everyone helped with the nets. When someone yelled "Fish on!" everyone retrieved their lines while the fight was on.<br /><br />Well, there was a big rock just downstream from where all the fishermen were standing. Some folks fished there, but they were out of the pattern and fished a different part of the river.<br /><br />This one guy...with a cooler full of beer...climbed up on top of the rock. He had already had a few of those beers, I suppose. He immediately started casting across the established pattern, fouling lines and creating some...shall I say...ill will with the dozen or so fishermen upstream of him.<br /><br />After words were spoken, he started fishing out of the pattern.<br /><br />Every once in a while, someone would hook up and the Sockeye would head downstream...below the rock, forcing the fisherman to go around the rock and downstream to continue the battle. The guys on the rock, normally, would duck low so the line could pass over.<br /><br />Well, this same drunk guy didn't quite get the drill. The man fishing above me hooked up, and the fish ran downstream. He hollered to the guy to duck. Instead, the guy whips out his sheath knife and cuts the man's line. That almost led to blows, but things calmed down.<br /><br />A little later, I had the same thing happen to me...my fish headed past the rock. Now, I didn't really care whether I actually landed that fish, since it was probably foul-hooked, as most of them were that went that direction.<br /><br />So, as my line was heading past the rock, I raised my rod tip, like all the others did, and yelled "Duck!" The guy reached for his knife again, just as I expected. What happened next was one for the funny videos show.<br /><br />Instead of trying to lift my line over his head, I brought it down, instead, behind his little cooler. With a nice sideways motion, I just bumped his cooler into the river. He tried to grab it, and followed the cooler, right into the drink.<br /><br />A loud cheer broke out among those he had been annoying all morning. The guy's buddy fished him out of the river and they went somewhere else to continue their fishing.<br /><br />I can still hear that cheer, along with the "OH, SH**" from the guy as he slipped off the rock trying to save his beer.

Re: Jerks

This is one of my biggest gripes whether on land or water. Being a transplant from Montana and Alaska I was brought up with the advise given by CATransplant's father. Living in New York has been an experience for me. The 1000 Islands are probably the worst place for big boats and little minds around here. You can be trolling along and a pack of 6 to 10 of the big Cigarette type boats will be racing at high speed apparently not caring about the lower class fishermen.
