The tilt/trim on my 115 Evinrude is very jerky when you lower it but is smooth as silk when you raise it up. After searching prior tilt/trim posts I realize the problem may be low fluid levels and/or air in the cylinders. Question is...not having a manual on hand where would one find access to the fluid reservoir and check the levels?

per manual:
Check once per year or every 50hours
Tilt engine up and engage tilt support
Slowly open fill cap allowing air to escape,
add OMC power trim/tilt & power steering fluid or GM Dextron II.
Fill cap in picture is at at base of hydraulc shaft holding engine up, appears to be a horizontal cap. You must then go thru 5 cycles of up down motion to purge air trapped inside due ot low fluid.
Just happend to have manaual at my desk as i have a frozen shift rod problem
Mike T

This may be a stupid question but do you go through the 5 cycles of up down motion with or without the fill cap on?

Re: jerky tilt/trim on 115 Evinrude

Took a look at tilt/trim last night. I did not see a "fill cap at the base of the hydraulic shaft holding engine up" I did however see a large flat head screw near the center of one of the cylinders (right cylinder when looking stern to bow). That was the only thing that seemed like a fill cap. I could not budge the thing when trying to unscrew it. There was also a hex nut near the top of the left cylinder with a rubber hose coming out of it. Could this be the fill cap?

The large flat head screw is the one. You may need an impact driver to break it loose.

Filled up the fluid using a marine grade tilt/trim hydraulic fluid and cycled the trim/tilt several times then let rest for approx 15 minutes then repreated. Did a total of 3 times. The tilt/trim is still very jerky on the way down. Had no sign of foaming fluid when I topped off after each cycle and the fluid level was always at the top of the fill cap. Is this a tilt/trim that shold be bled or are they self- bleeding? Not sure what else could be the problem.
