I am looking for information on a 20' 1978 Sundowner Jet Boat. It has a 455 Olds engine. I am looking at buying one, but I am not sure of the value of the boat. They are asking $1500. It is in good shape, but it needs a part relating to the carb. I am not sure exactly what it is (I will update this posting when I find out)I could not hear it run since the intake was unbolted as well as the valve covers. The engine is very clean.

If the seller is just telling me a story, and the engine is actually blown, on average, what would itc ost to get a used replacement engine? Is the $1500 worth the risk?

What should I look for when I inspect the engine? Are these basically car or truck engines?

Also, what should I look for relating to the jetdrive?

Thanks in advance!!

BoatnAround,

Yes, they are BASICALLY car/truck engines. There are some modifications, for marine.

Remember, the 455 Olds has not been in production for many years. I'm sure you can get parts, yet if the block is bad-so sorry!

The engine is the easy part. What kind of "pump" (jet drive) is on it?

Re: Jet Boat

Thanks DJ.

It has a Berkley Jet. It actually has a 454. I found that out after I looked at it closer. I actually picked it up for $1000! Sorry about all of the threads. I am new at this. I was also very desperate, because I had to make a descision the night I posted the threads on whether to buy the boat!

That 454 probably has a Quadrajet. You can get parts for GM engines practicly everywhere.
