hi all!
my question is what is the performance difference between a yamaha 50/35 and a mercury 60/40 jet. both outboards are 2 strokes. the yamaha 50/35 give or take is 80lbs lighter then the merc 60/40. the motor will be going on a 1992 tracker pro 16. thank you

Re: jet outboard question.

5 more hp and less weight to haul resulting in improved performance of a few mph. Both are prop rated so you are apples and apples. Also, since you said jet, when you get to a semi-dry rapids, the 80# difference will show up. Last, what about dealer availability? May never need one but you might ask yourself the relevance of dealer location.

as for dealers i have 3 yamaha dealers with in 35 minutes and 2 mercury dealers with in 35 minutes. so dealerships are a tie in time wise

Re: jet outboard question.

i was just thinking if the displacement of the 50/35 is 43 then technically that would be 30hp at the jet pump and not 35hp since jets you lose 30% power and the merc 60/40 displacement is 59 so then at the jet it would be 41hp. so in that theory wouldnt the merc be more torquey then the yamaha on the dyno and not even close in the power curve then?

Yes, but it's an hp measurement. Torque is just a part of what determines that deliverable hp.

Your merc jet will lift that hull in skinny water more efficient than yamaha. hp at jet means you'll probably have a different pitch jet impeller . More water through the jet.

Re: jet outboard question.

wouldnt the 60/40 get me on plain quicker?

I believe so . Also if you goggle (outboard jets make every river longer) and go to the FAQ's you will fine a wealth of information. When I got my first outboard jet, I considered it my jet bible.

Re: jet outboard question.

Manufacturers are allowed to be 10% above or below rated hp so it varies from motor to motor. Some manufacturers will under-rate a motor to fit into a popular hp requirement or to blow away the competition in a real world test and some will overrate for various reasons. I think it was 1984 or 1987 when manufacturers started rating hp at the prop instead of shaft which is about 10-15% more (depends).

Simple answer is apples and oranges. I would first look at the displacement and make a judgement about the accuracy of the ratings. You already know you will loose roughly 30% in a jet. Keep in mind net propulsion from small jet is minimal and rule of thumbs is to go as big as possible.
