Sad indeed ... there are distance rules for a reason.

Re: Jet Ski. No brakes! Fatality.

While motorcycles are mostly dangerous only for the rider, jet skies are dangerous to others on the water--they are big heavy fast vessels that don't manuever well--made to slide. These accidents occur becuase the operators do not appreciate that. Like motorcycles, the riders are exposed; there are lots of serious leg injuries from collisions.
I'm not suggesting that either is bad, or should be banned, but the jet ski riders need to appreciate the danger like most motorcycle riders do. I think the fact that they run on soft water instead of hard pavement gives the riders a tragicly false sense of safety.

Not to mention the total lack of steering with no throttle.

sad indeed. they're actually starting to market jet skis based on their stopping distance and ability to "brake" because this is such a problem. Best I can tell, jet skis are basically just accidents waiting to happen (anyone remember "3-wheelers"? I still have scars from riding those death traps), and you really can't do much with them other than make noise, annoy everyone else on the water (i suppose that's part of the appeal) and get hurt. I don't really "get" them, but lots of folks do, I suppose :/ The marinas love them because they're small, cheap and easy to rent to guys like the one in the article.
