Re: Jetting new Holley ...couple questions

When you tore the carb apart, I hope you replaced all the gaskets you destroyed....

Regardless of you saying the timing is correct, it sure acts as if it is not.
Those plugs are overheating, and there aren't really too many reasons why.

1. Wrong heat range plug
2. Timing advanced to far (my suspicion)
3. Lean A/F mixture
4. Leaky intake manifold gasket
5. Sticking intake valve

So, reverify the timing, and if that is not it, jet up.

Re: Jetting new Holley ...couple questions

Sorry to butt in with a question that only partially relates...

But I'm just finishing a rebuild of a Holley 4160 from my 89 Bayliner and I think I've messed up the Primary Metering block by letting it soak for 3 days.

This is my first rebuild and, though I took many pictures during the tear-down I don't have any that definitively show whether or not I've ruined it or not.

In any case, the overwhelming symptom that leads me to believe that it is toast is that I can "wiggle" the idle adjustment screws after I back them out 1.5 turns. (That can't be good.)

Holley has a replacement part 34-6 that appears to be identical to the block I have. It is described as a 4160 to 4150 conversion part and not as a 4160 Primary Metering Block replacement.

Does anybody know whether this part will work as the replacement for my goofed up metering block? I'm worried that there is a difference between the primary and secondary metering blocks in the "4150" series carburetors?

If you want an answer, start a new thread with your problem, don't hijack some ones else's thread. It is way too confusing when posters jump on the "what about my problem" bandwagon.

I made a setup and checked fuel pressure today. 7psi, so not a fuel pressure issue.....Hum, any thoughts?

You said you did the test with the old 2 barrel and got the same results, diesel and white plugs so if it wasn't an issue with the 2 barrel why are you concerned. With todays unleaded fuel plugs stay pretty clean. Frankly it think you are chasing a non problem. Maybe this will help.

I am 100% sure timing is right, I have checked it and verified the timing light is accurate. It does not detonate under load, as far as I can tell. (I know some slight pinging sometimes in difficult to perceive. I hope I am chasing a non-problem. I will triple check for vacuum leak again today but it idles/runs well so I doubt it has a vacuum leak to the magnitude it would require to lean it out at throttle level.

Re: Jetting new Holley ...couple questions

I sprayed the crap outta the whole intake system tonight and zero change in idle speed/smoothness.

Anyone else with SBC wanna do a nice 3000 rpm cruise and a shut down plug reading to see what plugs look like? :)
