Re: Job offer advise

I realize R & D can have infinate tangits but if you are prepared to go so far by the end of 8 hrs and you get to that point after 6 hrs for whatever reason. Do you sit there with your butt on a stool or do you go?

I'm prepared to stay longer from "time to time" but don't want it to become normal.

Re: Job offer advise

Well, the money they offering me is good enough to make an offer attractive to me, but not enough to keep me quiet if there is too much overtime:)

IMO, I'd look at the bottom line.

If the regular work week averages out to $12/hr, many extra "free" overtime hours can get old very quick.

If your salary is $50k/yr, then the extra expected hours, don't hurt nearly as much.

as you probably know most salaried jobs, now expect longer work weeks from the worker. Only you can decide how much is enough.

Since you don't need the job, you can play a little hardball, but since the job market stinks, don't be too surprised if they play hardball also.

good luck.

Re: Job offer advise

Well, I've talked to a few guys, read some government documents on the internet, read replies on this thread and found - they can't make me work more than 48 hrs/week unless agreed upon. Even if there is an agreement, it won't stand in the court of law, if it comes to it. Don't forget that here government gets a bigger portion of 1.5 times overtime payment, so they will do enything to get that portion, and there are cases here when company has to pay to worker the overtime money long after employement was terminated, even though there was an agreement. One can't be fired because he refuses to do overtime (I realise that they can come up with a hundreeds of reasons other than overtime).
Overtime compensation exemption is a very shady area too, where quite a few conditions must meet to qualify for an exemption. So it doesn't look too bad.

There is the big downside to this job though - I won't be able to spend much time during the work hours on I-boats anymore:D:D

Yes, and ministry of labour (not "labor" like in USA:)) here taxes overtime heavily in order to keep unemployement rates down.

Well on the topic of quarterly bonuses and stock options. I used to get them. Very healthy ones at that. If fact they used it as a selling point during the interviewing process years ago. Well we hired a new COO a little over a year ago and he brought in his buddy as a CFO and we haven't recieved a bonus yet and they took away the stock options. They claim the company isn't making a profit:confused: If that's the case it seems to me they aren't doing their jobs:mad: Sorry, I saw bonus and had to vent. Best of luck and believe me I wish I was in your shoes!

Companies screw people all the time.. If unemployed I'd take the job and keep looking, if you find something else and haven't been at this place long, drop them with no notice and leave them off your resume.. :)

That's one good thing about being an airplane mechanic, they might ask that you work overtime, but wow, are you compensated for it! You are only really asked to work that because they are behind, they're definitely not trying to screw you as they pay you 1.5 times the norm, at the very minimum. If I bust my butt at my new job, fresh out of school, I could easily gross over 50 grand a year. But, I want a life so I won't. I'll wait for my pay to go up over time instead! :D

Re: Job offer advise

How can I protect myself from situation when "time to time business needs" will become a norm. I know the person whom I'll report to, and know that he likes to keep his employees working long hours with no reason sometimes.
I don't mind doing overtime, but don't want to be abused either.
Any thoughts? Thanks.

Thanks for advise:D,
if you don't want to die in the car accident - don't drive
if you dont want to die in airplane crush - don't fly
if you want to protect yourself from food poisoning - don't eat.

I think as it applies here:

if you don't want to die in the car accident - don't drive....a car that you know has iffy brakes
if you dont want to die in airplane crush - don't fly in a plane... that you know has a bad maintenance record
if you want to protect yourself from food poisoning - don't eat potato salad...that you know has been on the picnic table all afternoon....

Re: Job offer advise

one thing I would add to this is this. you said he was "stealing" you from your current position. is your current job good, would you leave if he hadn't approached you? is your resume' out and about?

reason I ask is this, the grass isn't always greener. if your happy where you are then stay. no questions asked. if he has more money to offer then ask yourself why is he willing to pay more. why does he want to create a job for you. he wants more control of what you are doing for his company. I assume he's one of your customers. i went through that once long ago. luckily I was in a position to "try" the job out on a weekend without telling my boss. the new prospective boss wouldn't say anything to my old boss because I regularly made his parts.
anyways tried the job out and it was everything I had FEARED it would be. I hated it, didn't even stay a whole day.
your gut will tell you whether this is the right opportunity or not. follow it.

Right now from what i have seen in the US 70 is the new 40

It took my MBA wife 18 months to find a job that only required 10 hours a day with no weekends and once a week she is in at the crack of dawn to talk to asia office

And this job is a piece of cake compared to the one she left ;)

Never ever burn a bridge by leaving with no notice that would be lowering yourself to an all-time low. It's always good to keep looking, but trust me word of mouth will travel about "level of professionalism" when pulling a stunt like that. As a headhunter, this would be a serious show stopper and I would never work with a candidate if they had this attitude. And it isnt hard to find this kind of information out either.
