Re: Job Oportunity in Texas?

KKC,
We've moved cross country several times. If you have a family and quite a bit of stuff, the key is...I know this sounds stupid...planning. If you're going to move, start going through all your stuff now, and thin it out (garage sale, charity, etc). Will you be using a moving company? If so, some things to consider:
1. They won't move any "hazmat," including oils, cleaning products, aerosols, pressurized containers, etc. This stuff adds up and can be tough to get rid of if its partially full and laying around the house.
2. Take an accurate inventory of anything of value to you, and keep it yourself. Important papers, photos, heirlooms, that can't be replaced are best moved by yourself via a rented trailer or truck. U-haul is the cheapest, but watch out for their trucks as they are typically poorly maintained (their trailers have been okay to me, but uhaul trucks tend to break down on the interstate). In this trailer you can also take valuable items that movers won't take mentioned above, but be careful for flammables as it gets hot in the trailer!
3. When the movers are boxing your stuff, watch them like a hawk. They must write down all contents on an inventory sheet. Anything not going into a box is inventoried and stickered as well. You will receive a copy of inventory sheets to take yourself. Bottom line: If its not written down on the inventory sheet, you can't prove you ever had it or that they ever moved it. You may need to get the help of some dependable friends during this process, as it goes quick.
4. Don't let them mark items as damaged when they aren't, particularly furniture.
5. Biggest trick of movers is to pack stuff into boxes (particularly valuables) while nobody is watching and leave it off of the inventory sheet. That way, at the warehouse, they can open the box, steal the item(s), reseal the box, and there's no record of proof.
6. Same goes on arrival in your new location. Use YOUR copy of the inventory sheets to check off each item, not any sheets they give you.
Most movers I've dealt with are good people, but like any other business it has some sour apples, and you are in a very vulnerable position.
Again, planning. How are you going to get the boat, u-haul trailer, wife/kids, etc where you are going with the number of vehicles you have.
One of the biggest helpers in this process, whether you are moving yourself or having a moving company, is to thin out and organize your stuff now. Don't forget about the attic!

MAny don't like Houston, but I do. A big city with all the accessories, you can live smack dab in the middle of town and be at a duck blind on a Brazos river slew 30 minutes before sunrise, or at a Texas City dike launch ready to catch Specks and reds in Galveston Bay. When I lived there I was in the middle of the city, near Rice University which may be too expensive now adays, but look around, and I was always going the opposite direction from the rush hour traffic, out in the morning, and in on the evenings. I had a apartment in one of many 4plexes on Shakespere(if I remember correctly) near the intersection with Kirby. Another nearby intersection was University and Kirby to get you in the area. THis used to be affordable but also good. I take it you will be making this trip solo. THe adventure of it is great. Have fun.

KKC - Houston is a great city, but just keep one thing in mind. It is not a tourist type city. There are some pretty good museums, Astroworld, and not much else. If that thing isnt important, then all it good. Its not too important cause Galveston, San Antonio and Austin are tourist type cities and are nearby.

I suggest dont live on the west side as traffic is the worst there. The woodlands, clear lake, or off 288 are great places to live. If you like living in the city, there are tons of downtown lofts. Most areas within loop 610 are high dollar. For example, my uncle bought a house 10 years ago near downtown for 18,000 he sold the shack for 140,000 last month.

Houston is on an upswing right now, so everything will only be getting better.

Ken

Kenny:

YOU KNOW YOU ARE IN TEXAS IN AUGUST WHEN

The birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.

The trees are whistling for the dogs.

The best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.

Hot water now comes out of both taps.

You can make sun tea instantly.

You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.

The temperature drops below 95 and you feel a little chilly.

You discover that in July it only takes 2 fingers to steer your car.

You discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.

You actually burn your hand opening the car door.

You break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 a.m.

Your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death?"

You realize that asphalt has a liquid state.

The potatoes cook underground, so all you have to do is pull one out and add butter, salt and pepper.

Farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs.

The cows are giving evaporated milk.

;)

Beezee, I gave up the bike about 20 years ago but everytime I hear one my heart starts to pump a little faster. Sure do miss it even after all these years. That's a nice site y'all have.

LadyFish,

You discover that in July it only takes 2 fingers to steer your car.
I don't get it?

Mr. LadyFish,

I feel for you, as I to use to ride, but I was only able to afford a Honda, but I sure did love riding that thing. But a accident 15 years ago, sort of ended my riding. I too still crave the open wind, especially when a pack of bikes go by.

Re: Job Oportunity in Texas?

KKC,

I've moved across country many times and overseas and back 4 times. jimchere's advice/info is right on target. A couple of things I'd like to add:

- Do the inventory as jimchere suggests - take videos and digital photos of EVERYTHING - especially if it has monetary or sentimental value. Leave a copy of the inventory with family and keep a copy with you. Should anything happen, your insurance company will need the inventory.

- Throw out old magazines and stuff. Despite what some people think, it is not against the law to toss old National Geographics. Lose as much weight as possible.

- If you pack and move yourself, do it carefully and mark every box with its contents. Guarantee when you get to your new home you'll not find some stuff for weeks if not marked properly. UHaul and others have lots of “high tech” packing materials that can get spendy but can really save your stuff. Cardinal rule – you can never have too many moving blankets to protect your furniture.

- If you have a moving company do the job, watch 'em like a hawk. Double check their inventory and make sure they put all the boxes and furniture on the truck. The only “professional” in the group will be the driver – he/she makes the big $$ - get friendly with him/her. I usually presented the driver with a bottle of their favorite booze just as they were leaving with all our stuff. When the truck pulls away, be prepared for a major anxiety attack!

I don't care what anyone says, moving is not fun. Never has been, never will be. It does not, however need to be an onerous chore. If approached systematically, and yes, planned well, it can go smoothly.

In all my moves - self done and mover done - I've never had any serious damage or loss. Yeah, a few things here and there but nothing earth shaking.

Good luck to you - hope you enjoy your new life in Houston.

tcube
