Hey Joe since I see you have a lot of experience with omc I could use your help.<br />I have a 96 johnson 50hp I'd like to install a tach. is this possible and how do you do it. Also is there any particular tach i should get?<br />thanks in advance

H2ODog,<br /><br />The tach. plugs into the conbtrol box just below the throttle friction knob (under the key). It is a half round plug.<br /><br />You will need the harness available at any John/Rude dealer.

H2ODog.... If you're using a regular OMC control box assy, follows DJohns advice. There is one omc tach that comes rigged with the harness, ready to simply plug into that connector under the key switch. However, if you are using a different type control such as is usually found on a console, rig the tach as follows:<br /><br />Gray wire leading from tachometer (Pulse Sensor) to gray wire leading from instrument wiring harness. Black wire from tach (Ground) to any ground located at console. Red wire (light bulb) from tach to light switch. Purple wire from tach (12v) to any 12v source that is active only when ignition switch is in the "on" position.

I actually finally found it in the shop manual, you would think they would put a reference to it in the contents but noooooo..lol.... Anyway no control box, but the wiring harness has three ring connectors for the tach. thanks again guys
