Mrc3.... I read that post and the question. There's no need to be constantly removing and reinstalling the flywheel. Simply set the points on the highest portion of the lobe to .010 .

There is nothing more one can do to the points. If I've overlooked the question and am in error, let me know here.

Thanks for responding. The problem I have is that the motor ran better at
mid to low RPM's before I set em to .01. In the OMC service manual they
talk about setting the timing at 4500 RPM in gear. Which I believe will only
effect the full advance timing correct? Which would not do much for my
low RPM ignition woes induced by my setting of the points.

I'm probably missing something here, can you suggest what?

Thanks again,
Mike

The timing pertains strictly to full throttle, full spark advace timing. I can't imagine why the correct point setting would interfere with the engines idle. Double check the setting on all of the lobes. There will be times that one lobe causes a tighter setting then others. Use the lobe that allows you to insert and remove the .010 feeler gauge freely.

Thanks again Joe,
I'm afraid I don't understand what the "lobes" are.

I set both points to .01 with the gauge slipping freely and it ran rather
poorly.

Tonight I pulled the flywheel and opened up the points "two clicks"
(The screws to adjust the points apear to have detents, perhaps 1/8 turn or so)
I'd guess they are at about .012-.013 or so now.

Engine ran MUCH better. Gained about 70 RPM WOT and smooth through
the throttle range.

I've arranged to borrow a timing light Wednesday to check the WOT timing.
Provided thats not too far off am I okay to run it like this? The phrase "a two
runs best right before it blows a piston" comes to mind

Thanks again for your time.
Mike

Think I just figured out the "lobe"... ie the bulge in the crankshaft that drives
the points?

Mike

Joe, question on the relation ship between the points and the spark.

Is the spark on the opening or closing of the points in this ignition system?

What relationship is there between the point gap and strength or duration of the
spark?

Thanks again,
Mike
