Re: Joe Reeves need your help

I have a 59hp Evinrude and it runs great for about 20 min. After that it will only go half speed. Compression is 125 & 115. Am looking at carbs. Any help would be great.
Don Shephard

dkshep,

I don't know what a 59hp Evinrude is. Maybe a 9.9?

However, it sounds to me as if you are dropping a cylinder (spark).

dkshep,

Yes, it could a plug dropping out for various reasons.

1. Coil going bad.

2. Powerpack.

Thanks for the info I will checknext time it does it. When it runs half speed can i pull one of the plug wires to see if there is a difference. Or should I go on and replace the coils, then the powerpack.
Don

Don,

Pull one of the wires first to see if you can isolate it. No sense in buying parts that you do not need.

For what its worth, that's exactly the way my V4 85hp acted when it blew the power pack. Since I lost spark on 1 cyl bank, I figured it out by swapping the pack leads and the dead cylinders followed the leads (ie, cyl 1 was dead-cyl 3 firing, swapped leads and 1 fired and 3 died). Only did this because I knew only one side was firing.
