Re: joe reeves timing question

I think bigd was referring to idle timing, but the discussion was WOT timing, simply because the Reeves method was being discussed.
Cut him some slack.

I also think that most everybody that has trouble with the Reeves method is doing it incorrectly, mainly that they have not disabled QS properly. You must disable QS.
Joe put this WOT timing method together long before QS was added into the PP function. So, using his method exactly as written will cause problems, unless you disable QS.

As I have posted, I do both idle and WOT timing in a tank. The WOT is done with the engine running, simply disconnect the timing link from the timer base arm, and leaving the throttles CLOSED, advance the timer base manually. Check / set the WOT timing and re-attach the timer base arm. Never have to disable QS again.

Search my past posts (less that 1 month ago) for a longer discussion.

Re: joe reeves timing question

jstrat...I just don't bother to try to disable QS. Try it my way, you will like it.

But, when I have disabled QS in the past, I did as you posted, BUT I also disconnect the yellow/red at the pack. Now this is a problem, because the connector for that one is under the pack. And who wants to lift the pack.... If you disconnect it at the starter solenoid, that will work, but then you cannot use the key to start it (or turn it over). You must then use a remote starter switch connected to the solenoid properly. One guy even posted that his engine would not even run with the yellow/red disconnected....that one still baffles me.

Both the yellow/red and the white/black have to be switched/changed/adjusted/modified...etc... to disable QS.

I just don't bother anymore. Do it while running.

Re: joe reeves timing question

I must clarify something. What I posted in post #11 was in the days before Quick Start where you didn't have to disable it when cranking. Sorry.
