Hey Joe,

I noticed you were online so i thought i'd get YOUR opinion about omc vro. I'm the guy in ocala with the 1996 evinrude oceanpro 225 v6 looper that seized up about two months ago. it's still at the mech. hope to get it back next week. anyway, i had been premixing my fuel 50:1. the mech wants to reinstall the vro system on the rebuilt motor. all new parts since the old one is not on the boat anymore. he says that if the system is maintained annually and the pump replaced every 3 years i'll shouldn't have any problems.

What do you think?

Thanks again for all you help. Much appreciated. :D

Bill

The VROs first came out in 1984 and have been upgraded quite a few times. In my opinion, back around 1988, they had perfected them but I think that they were upgraded even more since then. As long as the warning system is operating as it should, I feel quite at ease with them.

Some boaters have voiced their thoughts such as "What if that overpriced plastic horn should fail while I'm under way for some reason, and the VRO decides to fail five minutes later?" Obviously that would result in a big problem which really brings their fears into view.

The word "ease" is the key word though. If one has the slightest feeling of being ill at ease with that setup, then they should take the route they feel more at ease with. A judgement call each individual would need to make on their own.

Thanks Joe,

Actually i would fell quite at ease with a system that been working for years. If you think about all the motors that omc sold since 84 vs the number of failures that are confirmed vro failures then the vro system really works well.

Does the vro setup for this motor mix the gas and oil before or after the carburater? In other words, I really don't know how the system works. If you could point me to a link that explains this setup i would appreciate it.

Is it true that this motor when operating in the mid range (3300-3800 rpm which is about 27 mph)that i should have the mech adjust it to run a little rich by using a different midrange air jet? I read a post that said the factory midrange jet causes this motor to run lean.

Thanks again for all you advice.

Bill

The gasoline and oil both are fed to the VRO pump where it is mixed, then delivered to the carburetors.

Pertaining to your third paragraph about the mid range rpm and the lean possibility.... sorry, I have no knowledge of that as I retired a few years before that engine existed and therefore haven't seen any bulletins on that problem.
