Isn't the whole point that the easier a motor is to maintain the more likely it'll get it making for a longer life and a more enjoyable outing?

Whats that got to do with anything???this is a discussion on brand maintenance: easy/not so easy...long term life expectancy...not bragging rights.

Re: john/rude the only way to go

"Now I have a Yamaha 4 stroke. I've never serviced one of these. So last week, I had it serviced for the first time (10 hours breaking in service). I let the Yamaha guys do the oil and filter change, and the lower unit oil change. I was there, watched and learned. I'm not paying for this again! I also asked the mechanic to teach me how to change the timing belt, but he just gave me pointers. I'm planning to get a service manual for my OB, but they aren't out just yet (it was manufactured in sept 2008).

I really beleive there is no "best" brand out there. All OB manufacturing plants are state of the art these days."....Nicco....

Yeah, but.....
Do you really feel comfortable servicing that Verado with the supercharger???

I have another post on here..looking for my 23-24 Walkaround. I don't want anything but a Yamaha, and really feel like I want the newer 4 strokes. It looks like I may get what I have been looking for. An early Father's day phone call resulted in us hearing our offer on a 23' KeyWest with twin Yamaha 115 4 strokes has been accepted. I really didn't look at any boat that did not have the Yamaha motor. I have only owned them since 1986 and have yet to have a failure that left me stranded. Yeah, my 150 2 stroke broke the trim sending lever. And it did seem to use a lot of 2 stroke oil....but for the past 23 yrs these motors have been dependable, reliable, affordable and I just don't see any reason to change.
As an old gearhead, I think I will do just fine servicing those 4 strokes. Actually looking forward to it! ;)

The title of the thread says Johnson/Evinrude is the ONLY way to go.

The first post reiterates that statement. So that's the topic, not maintenance.

Two strokes= lots of maintenance. Four strokes slightly less and more reliable.

I'm having a little difficulty with this statement...

2 strokes have very few moving parts, and the only maintenace is lube + plugs for the most part.

A 4 stroke is oil, filters, timing belts, plugs, lube, and the list goes on...

ease of maintenace on 2 strokes is exactly why there are alot of old timer outboards running like they day they were purchased. That can't really be said of the 4 strokes as of yet.

Re: john/rude the only way to go

and 4 strokes suffer more from ethanol poisoning.

"If you want to get there, mercury; if yuo want to get home, OMC" was the conventional wisdom on the river when I was growing up (60's 70's). The Merc s ran faster, when they ran. The OMC's were unbreakable work-horses.
I'll go with the old OMC's any day, although by odd circumstance I now have a 1972 Merc. Not running btw but it was fast when it did.

One thing about age/maintenance discussions that is unbalanced: a high-salt environment is a different world than fresh/brackish. I read about you all with ancient OMC's tooling about like nothing, where here, in the salt, a minor problem on an old motor is unfixable b/c you can't get into them--they are self-sealing and child-proof!
