ready to take it out, but once out I'm not exactly sure what to look for. any suggestions on where to start with an inop trim? of course the gauge is tightly tucked into the side console where it will be a monster to get loose.

On the back of the gauge, there is a "S" (sensor) terminal. Grounding that "S" terminal to the "G" terminal should peg the gauge needle if the gauge is good. This is assuming that there is 12 volts being applied to the "I" terminal.

If the above is as it should be, either a wire is loose, broken, or the sending unit at the engine is faulty.
