Johnshan,

As I recall, you built a boat. 15 footer, as I remember

Do you have a website with your progres pictures and where you got the plans?

I'm thinking of tackling one.

Thanks.

Re: Johnshan1, you out there?

too lazy to post a pic right now. however some info. this plan is in both a 15 and an 18 foot version. I am building a mine to be 16.5 feet. to do this i just took the 18 footer and shortened it. I am also modeling mine after a certian production boat so i will have flush front and rear decks and a smaller motorwell in back as well as a higher sole. I will asso be powering this craft with a 50 hp merc that now sits on the back of my 18 foot lund striper rig. Right now i have got the hull glassed on the outside and i have finished glassing a console with a 10 gallon livewell in it. I have a homeade swingback seat which will sit 1 foot forward of the rear deck and hold a 20 gallon baitwell. my rear deck is going to covor most of the designed motorwell and be just long enough to hold one seat base. i am building this boat for striper and bass fishing in those big southern resivoirs and also doing some creek fishing down on the ga coast. This thing is going together easily and i have had a lot of fun with it so far. i just wish i had more time for it.

PS i hope this post wasnt too long and rambleing.

That is an absolute beatutiful boat. In looking at your seating I think you should at least get some padding. :) Does it run fast with that 40?
How long did it take you to build?

Re: Johnshan1, you out there?

Thanks Realgun :) I would agree with the seating comment but I have to drive standing up with the way the console is so I dont even use that seat, I think I am going to take the center console out and make a smaller one or make a small side console so we can fish it easier, not sure but either way the console will be made out of bright finished oak like the top railing and seat tops.

I started building the boat when I was 20, im now 22, so roughly 2 years in the making.

I will say that I finished to boat enough to use it the first year, started march 1 and worked until july 4 to get her in the water, it was really rough, no top rail, no paint on the inside, it was rough but usable. Then I added a top rail, put her away for the winter and a tree fell through the rear of it, spent another 3 months of off and on work to totally do all the oak (theres 72' of 1 1/2" oak trim in the boat) and I painted the inside creme color, Durabak which is a bedliner coating.

The 40 hp moves it along awesome. 33 mph with myself and the girlfriend or fishing buddy in it with all our gear I burn an average of 3-4 gallons of gas for an 8 hour period of trolling/fishing this boat is cheap to run. It will cruise out at 22 mph at a touch over 1/2 throttle. Awesome performance, instantly on plane, etc.

Can you tell I love this boat? :)

Re: Johnshan1, you out there?

By the way to further clarify, I have about 8 months work of work into it but for the first 4 months i worked every spare second i could on it and stayed up all hours of the night working on it.

10-12 months would be reasonable for the finish quality of this boat others will want a better finish and take longer, but im happy with it.

I will also add I put 75 hours on the engine this seasons, 65 of those were on the ocean off the coast of maine, I feel comfortable with the boat it takes the weather well if you know its limits. There was a couple times this last summer i was downright frightened, once was 30 mph wind gusts in May and I was bound and determinted to go fishing for stripers. I was drenched to the bone with spray, even my shoes were totally full of water.

The other time I was heading up the Kennebec river to get some eels from a bait guy up river next to the destroyers at BIW and the wind sure whips through there, I was battling 4' swells easliy all i could do was ride in between them, it was spaced perfectly so that the boat was in the trough, I was scared to death and so was my fishing buddy. Talked to another guy who said he had just been through 6-8' swells further down river.

I do take the boat a couple miles out a lot but you really need to know what your doing in the event the weather does kick up. I have a GPS, Lowrance depth, VHF radio, and all kinds of flares. The thing you really need is common sense and you will be fine.

Talk about rambling I will end the post right here. :)

Hey Y'all,

I have a million questions.

If you like, let's confer via email.

Mine is: projectstoomany(the at symbol)juno.com

I might be able to get a friend to build a simple website that we can confer on, pic's and all.

I'm intrigued!

In the meantime, thanks John for sharing.

One of my first questions is: are the plans flexible? ie; length, height, width?

Hey DJ my email isnt working at this time so I will post it here,

The plans will allow you to scale + or - 10% if I recall correctly.

Problem is with the 15' version, it uses exactly 4 sheets of plywood for the hull. If you were to modify any dims it would require a lot more wood for a little more room. Might not be a problem but rather a consideration. Im pretty happy with my hull it rides pretty well for a boat of that size and is fairly dry.

What did you have in mind for changes?

-John

John,

I like the design, just would like to go a bit wider and longer. 10% might work. Hmmmm!

Let me know when your email is up.

Thanks.

DJ.

Re: Johnshan1, you out there?

It sounds like the OB17 is what your after,

http://www.bateau.com/proddetail.php?prod=OB17

Its a wider (2' wider), slightly longer version of the OB15 if you will. I was thinking about if you modified the Ob15 that would also require you to modify the jig in which it is built upon.

-John
