kfa,
Yeah middle of nowhere is nice as every time I go to the big city of either Tallahassee or Gainesville, I can't wait to get back home where no one is ever in a rush like in the big cities. I grew up in Altamonte Springs just north of Orlando and back in the 60's it great, old Florida. Steinhatchee is like that now 50 years later and that is why I am here.

Motor update, got the head off this afternoon and cooling passages near thermostat all plugged up. Still can not get the exhaust cover plate screws loose but the water passages in there seem clear. Still have two more sheared off screws in the power head to remove. Got one out today with the propane torch, hammer and screwdriver. Ran out of gas for the torch so the others will wait for tomorrow.

I was using mapp gas as my propane bottle ran dry a while back as well. Which one will give me a higher temp??

I have oxygen/ acetelene regulators, hoses & torches but no bottles. Gave them to my neighbor in Indiana when I moved down here for retirement. Maybe I need to buy some bottles.

Yeah it is relative and this place doesn't even have a stop light. I lived and worked in big cities my whole working career, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Kunming, PRC, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and Indianapolis.

Propane or MAPP gas are fine. Don't use acetylene or you'll melt the head.

Re: Johnson 10 hp 1961 OD22 disassembly

Just an update. Got the head off the other day. Last two bolts finally came out. Yesterday, the remaining two 1/4-20 screws which had sheared off at the powerhead to lower unit interface were finally removed. Tried heating with propane torch and ground new screw driver slot in the top but no joy. Finally drilled them out being very careful to get the drill started in the center of the broken off section. Ground them flat with a dremmel and then used center punch.

Used an easyout on one with good result. Second one did not want to budge with the easyout so to avoid breaking off a easyout, I continued to drill larger holes until I got within several thou ( .010 - .020 ) of the thread minor diameter. Then used tap and got the threads cleaned up.

By the way I found an impact screwdriver at my local hardware store made by Great Neck tools.( www.greatnecktools.com ). It seems to be made pretty well and is almost a necessity when getting some of these bolts and screws loose.

Waiting on parts from Seattle which won't arrive until 14 feb. Presently stripping the dark blue paint someone put on the motor and will try to go back with original colors. What were the original colors and decals.

thanks for all the help.

Karl,
Way too pricey for my blood. Painting metal pairts with Moeller zinc chromate primer with Tempo OMC white. Found some nice decals on e-bay that will look nice so it will not be original. Since I will use this motor myself, originality is not important.

For the overheating problem, found the thermostat was inop with no movement detected at over 212 Deg F. Waiting on new one to arrive on Wednesday and will start to go back together with this motor.

The fiberglass top cowling was a little distressed so I coated it inside and out with boat building epoxy and made some repairs at the rear corners. Sanding now for primer and paint. Really strong now and much better than original.

Will post pictures when back together and running.
