I have a Johnson 10 hp (model QD-14, 1953)that has a annoying problem. When driving in forward it will occassionally jump out of gear into neutral. Its getting worse as it use to only occur at high speeds. Now at slower speeds it happens often (say every 40 seconds). Even if I hold the shifter down it still kicks out of forward into neutral and back into forward. It happens quickly making the motors jump.

any ideas....

While the geascase is apart, check the forward and reverse gears for rounding in the recess where the clutch dog lands. If there's rounding, replace.

As well, I have a qd20 1959 10hp Johnson Seahorse that is doing the same thing but only in forward, reverse works fine.
1) Is there any adjusment for this I can try to do before taking to shop$$?
2) As I read on here it says I can simply change the forward and reverse dog and be good to go?
2) I can't find where to order the "clutch dogs" from for this...

Thanks for any help/links..

Re: Johnson 10 hp jumps out of gear

I have been fighting this problem on my '78 25hp evinrude.

I've replaced the entire lower unit (wanted to make it a long shaft anyway) and the gears looked fine.

I've replaced the control cables, adjusted the gear shift cable, and it's still doing it.

only in forward, and only at ~half or higher throttle.

Otherwise the old girl runs great!

I have a manual for it, but I don't recall any clutch involved when swapping lower units - can someone explain this to me???

There is a sliding "clutch dog" on the prop shaft which sets between the forward and reverse gears. In the middle (neutral) it doesn't contact either gear. In forward, a yoke attached to the shift rod, pushes the clutch dog so it meshes with the forward gear. There are tabs on the clutch dog which engage tabs on the forward gear. Same happens in reverse but in the opposite direction. If those tabs get rounded (either on the clutch dog or gear or both) it won't stay firmly engaged and the motor slips out of gear. Getting a good used lower unit is the best, and most economical fix, as those parts in new condition are very expensive, and would probably cost more than the motor is worth.

Re: Johnson 10 hp jumps out of gear

Thanks a ton for the quick replies guys.

I have a couple spare engines - I will look at those and see if I can pick the best clutch dog.

I'm planning to upgrade to a larger engine soon - this one runs well but isn't enough power for a 24ft pontoon - but I'd like to be able to sell this engine and control set in good working order - it would be a great engine for a smaller fishing boat.

The next project will be converting the tiller I'm thinking about buying to a remote control ('96 60hp mercury oil injected two stroke big foot)
