Johnson 10hp, Sea Horse, Model QD-21,
Serial 2016677

I have had this motor running. Have not been able to get started this year. I have been told it has no spark and I will not be able to get the parts. I would love to restore this outboard. where do I get the parts and find someone to work on it?

Do you have any mechanical ability? If so, order up a manual and fix it yourself. It's really not that difficult, and you only need a couple tools that are out of the ordinary. These older Johnny/Rudes are particulairly easy to work on.
Ignition parts for that engine are all available and are still being manufactured. On top of that, as far as outboard parts go they're pretty cheap. You can essentially replace the entire system for a little over $50 in parts. Parts that are no longer made are not difficult to find.
I expect you'll have a hard time finding someone to wrench it for you, since old outboards are usually regarded as not cost effective to repair.
Your QD-21 is a 1960 10hp engine. It's fuel mix is 24:1 87 octane gas to TC-W3 rated outboard oil and the spark plugs should be Champion J4C gapped at .030".

Tell us what you think - we can tell you where to get manuals, what tools you'll need, etc.

1958 Evinrude 10hp site. - This is nearly identical mechanically to your 1960 Johnson.

if it is not spark, i coul be the coils, condenser or points, a easy job for someone who has done it before....
I think parts from 6-9,5-15-18-20-25-28-33-40 hp from 195*-197* would fit.

Great engine you got there,1960 with strong fuelpump, got the same on my self, maybee the only one left in Norway?

I am so psyced! I have ordered all the electrical parts I could get. Coil, tune up kit, etc...$52.00 . I also ordered the repair manual. You mentioned tools, I have a good assortment tools. Do I need anything unique? I would like to get this running before it gets cold! Thanks for all your help. I'll keep you posted and I'm sure I'll have questions.

About the only non-standard issue tool you'd need is a "harmonic balancer puller", or "3-point" puller for yanking the flywheel off the crankshaft to access the ignition parts. DO NOT pry on the flywheel or try to use a claw type puller on the outer edge. The aluminum flywheel can be bent fairly easily. There are several posts here on iboats on proper flywheel removal techniques... Pullers can be had at Sears, NAPA, etc. for fairly inexpensive. Invest in some good cap screws for the puller in place of the weaker bolts provided with the puller. You'll need 1/4"-20-thread bolts...

- Scott

That's what I was thinking of. Thanks Chinewalker!

Also, you're going to need the following:

A torque wrench (ft/lb reading) for the flywheel nut.
A feeler guage (preferably wire) for setting the points (.020")

That's it really. Everything else is a common hand tool. The only fastener on the whole outboard that you use the ft/lb reading torque wrench on is the flywheel nut. Other things need an inch/lb reading one, but you likely won't ever be dealing with those bolts (head, connecting rod, etc).

Did you confirm that you have no spark?

Hmm, sounds like a familiar story, was the person who told you you wouldn't be able to get the parts a shop owner by any chance? A shop that sells nice shiny expensive new outboards maybe?

Thanks gentlemen for the help. The main reason I kept hunting for options was because they (shops) either wanted to dispose of it for me, or suggested a new outboard. I will collect the few tools I will need and dive in. My son (13) is excited about the project. Thanks again.
