My earlier post refers you to a specific part number which will work in your application. That 438559 pump is the old style high capacity pump which has 3 hose barbs. One of them connects to the old VRO pulse hose which you originally had on this engine. It screws to the block, but does not have the direct port in the back of the housing.

It also has an idle problem. It wont run at idle if I do not give it some throttle, I never had this problem before. Could it be related?

Are you experience an intermittent "lean sneeze" at idle? You may have some debris (dried fuel) in the idle passages in the carb. When at idle, the carb butterflys are closed. The fuel at idle passes through dedicated idle passages only. They are very small passages. If they get restricted, the engine won't idle. As soon as you crack the throttle just a little, the mid and high speed jets take over, permitting the engine to run better. The only want to cure a lean sneeze is to disassemble the carbs completely and clean the idle passages with a product which will dissolve dried fuel, such as a Gumout type product-get it at your local auto parts store.

I checked all the linkage and it seems to all be working correctly. Can I take the carbs off and clean them without having to re gasket them back to the block?

I usually reuse the gaskets between the carbs and powerhead. They don't need sealant, so the carbs should come off easily.

How hard is it to rebuild the carbs? Is it just a gasket kit and a new float?

I honestly don't recall ever actually rebuilding any carb on any thing except my old 4 barrel on my 74 ranchero's 351W, unless it has an old cork float which I have not really seen on post 60's model anythings, a good cleaning should sufice, making certain all jets are un-obstructed, even most gaskets can be reused if carefull, but at the most I've replaced sticking float valves with new valve and seats which are around $5-6 a carb, a new chamber gasket $6-7 carb, the rest can be cleaned out! but the whole kit is only like $23, again just a good cleaning is all that is need use some solid copper wire 24-26 awg along with some compressed air depending on the size of your carbs jets to clear them out laquar thinner can work wonders on residue to break it up just keep it away from gaskets and seals! and make sure your float is adjusted to specs
