good evening fellas,
my wife and i were out the other day fishing. we "trolled" for about 8 hrs. and never really got on the gas and throttled. at the end of the day, i heard a knocking noise that wasn't there before. we proceeded into the marina at a higher speed as it was getting dark. when we got to the marina, the noise was gone. the motor that we are talking about is is a 1989 johnson 110 with the vro disconnected mixed precisely at 50:1. lost sleep all the night wondering what it could be. did a compression check today, came out as follows: 90lbs. 91lbs. 90.5lbs. and 92lbs. from what i've read everyone seems to have 115 to 130lbs. is there a chance that i should get another gauge and recheck it?? went to lake again today, boat ran awesome, idles perfect, runs as if nothing ever happened. i grounded my buzzer wires from the head, the warning system seems to be working. nothing gets hot. when i first heard the knocking noise, i pulled the cowl and everything was fine, cool to the touch. what i'm asking here is: could the boat have been "loaded" up from running low speeds all day?????? and also does 90 lbs. sound too low for compression? thanks for reading my post and any input would be great. j.w.

JW.... YOu ask: "what i'm asking here is: could the boat have been "loaded" up from running low speeds all day?????? and also does 90 lbs. sound too low for compression?"

Yes, absolutely that knocking noise could very well (and most likey did) result from trolling for eight (8) hours. Those high performance engines aren't designed for trolling. However, when they are used for that purpose, it's a good idea to clear the crankcase out every so often by increasing the rpm.

A compression reading of 90 psi is about right for the 1989 model. The compression ratio was lowered right around that time to compensate for the poor quality fuel that we've encountered.

joe,
thanks for the reply,i feel much better now!!!
would it be safe to use an external tank mixed at 75:1 for trolling?
my wife landed a 32in.weighing in at 12.75lbs. striper which is pretty good considering where we are at, meaning we would like to continue to "troll". Also, do you believe that i may have caused any damage?? thanks again for your quick reply, now i can sleep tonight!! j.w.

jw - I have a pair of 1987 110s (SeaDrives). With as much trolling as you do you might consider adding a 9.9 to the transom giving you a get home motor and one for the extended trolling.

I would stick to the 50:1 on the mix and no I don't think you hurt your motor. You may want to decarb once in a while to clean out the innards.
