I have a 1988 Johnson 110. I just replaced Coils,CDI,plugs, wires, fuel pump, and rebuilt the carbs. I resolved my ignition problems but I am having trouble getting my motor idel right. The motor is hard to start even after turning the lever on the primer solenoid but after I get it started and turn the lever back the motor revs to 4000 - 5000 rpm. I don't know where to look from here. :( :( :(

met128,

The only two possibilities I can think of are:

1. Your linkage is bound up.

2. You have a tremendous air leak somewhere on the powerhead.

Where do you think I should look? The motor had the VRO removed when I purchased the boat. Should I look there? I know that the linkage is not binding.

met,

Check every hose very carefully.

Also, was the VRO pump actually removed and a small diapragm type installed? If so, look at the pulse line connection on the pump or the pump to block gasket.

yes, the there is a new diaphram on the fuel pump. I will check all the hoses for a leak.

Just for kicks, what is the physical position of the throttle butterflies with the control unit shift lever in NEUTRAL and the idle lever in the SLOWEST position? (They should all be closed.)

Let us know what you find.

Yes, the butterflys are all closed. I am going to try the trick of spraying WD40 around the carbs but I know that the carbs are well seated with new gaskets.

Just for kicks, is the little yellow plastic plug still clipped over one of the fuel hoses? If not do you know where it is?

Good luck!
