Hi! johnson 110-86
My motor runs fine without gear but with gear in the water it loses power at 2000 rpm and do not run any faster. I tried to choke but it stops the motor. I have cleaned the carburetors. The compressions are 110,102,101,115. The rectifier does not work but I disconnected the yellow and yellow/grey wires. Do I need to disconnect the grey and purple too? New sparks (Champion ??77? from boat shop) There is a spark on all 4 spark plugs. The sparks get fuel. I have changed around ignition coils. I have moved port CD to starboard and starboard CD to port. There is a crack in the stator but the ohm readings are fine 570 ohms brown/brown-grey and ~0 ohm on yellows.

I thought about the timing seting according Joe Reeves at cranking. I do not understand how I can "set the timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop screw" when the throttle is at full. Isn't the "rubber stop screw" the "idle screw" ?

PLEASE HELP ME!

I think this is related to your tach problem (previous post). The stator is suspect.

Re: Johnson 110 power loss

Please help! The mechanics are still on vacation.

I made a sparktester for all 4 sparks.

I found out that one ignition coil can't fire a spark when the distance is 7/16".
CAN the ignition coil be my problem. It works when running without load but when it is in the water and I'm accelerating it does not have power to fire a spark and the motor will lose one cylinder??

/Harry

Re: Johnson 110 power loss

I found a hole for a screw in the inlet aft of the carbs and now I found out that the screw was used to keep hold of the reed valve inside.

The problem is still there. I can't get it running on high rpm (over 2000 rpm) when it is in water.
I wonder if it can be the compression 101-115 psi.
Or do you know if the reed valve can give me this problem?

I opened the "air cover" to the carburetors and saw and felt "air/fuel mix" coming out from the carburetors when driving. I do not know if it should be like that. Maybe the reed valve have been destroyed?
Do you have any idea?

Best regards, Harry

Harry - I have read here that it is not a good idead to run these motors with the air cover off.

SoLittle,

It's Ok for diagnostic purposes. Just don't make a habit out of it.

Without the air box cover, your mixtures get all messed up, read LEAN. Not good, under load.

Re: Johnson 110 power loss

Harry where did the screw go ??? If its rattling around inside the motor, you will have a bad surprise some day it finds its way to a cylinder. Severe blowback thru a carb is usualy sign of a broken or chipped reed causing a cylinder to miss or not run at all. Weak spark in open air on a cylinder, too is a fault. I would look into the reed problem first. If you suspect the screw got into the motor and reeds can be damaged, get hold of a manual and get the carbs and intake off and fix it, would be my first advice.

Hi!
I have no idea where the screw ended up. When I took over the motor. I happened to see it was missing. I guess it gas shaken loose and fell off.
Yes I will remove the carburetors again and the inlet manifold and check the Reeds.

/Harry
