New boat to me. I has a Johnson 110 VRO outboard that runs great only when I hold the little button in on the side of the shift/throttle assembly. What is this button and why is it that I have to hold it in in order to run this boat. Is it a kill switch? I have never owned an outboard motor without a tiller before so any information is appreciated.

While I am at it, how does one go about lubricating a lower unit? Do I need to and if so how do I know? Thanks guys, I am a rookie.

Sounds like the safety switch. You need to get the lanyard and clip for it. Available at any OMC dealer.
I know you came here looking for instant answers, but I suggest you get a manual for your particular motor. It will pay for itself in short time.

I agree, the manual is a must. I kinda figured that the manual would only cover the motor. Do you think it would describe the linkage as well? I am a fisherman so I am fully aware that instant results are a myth. I have a message in with the former owner.

lower unit lube change - once a year - I do it before the first freeze, so in case it took on some water in there it won't bust up my gearcase: there's two screw-in plugs on the starboard side, a drain hole and a vent hole.
1. remove drain plug
2. remove vent plug - let some of the oil run over your fingers - look for metal. A small amount of shavings is normal - the drain plug is magnetized so there will be some on there. Used oil is usually dark gray or black. If it's streaky or milky, you've got water in it & need seals.
3. get a lower unit lube pump whereever you buy your lube (about $5). It has a hose that screws into the drain hole. Pump oil in until it starts to come out the top.
4. install the vent plug.
5. remove the pump hose and install the drain plug.
6. remove the vent plug and top off the oil level if needed - it should be up to the bottom of the vent hole.

welcome to the forum!

No, no law against it BUT you would be well advised to enable that kill switch to its normal operating condition. Patch work has been known to result in fatalities!

anyone have advoce on how to install my skeet shooter onto the stern of this boat? Have welder and shooter but would appreciate some down home reckons. Is the skeet sanitary for the lake? Legal (least of my worries)?

thanks for re-enforcing the kill switch concept Mr. Reeves. that really helped get the $$ from the banker (wife). Will quite comlicate the hassle with dis and re assemble but if it's a safety issue then it's worth it. This forum has been great. Can't wait to tell firends at work about it.

Yes the skeet shooter should be another post. I suggest the Boat Topic.

I will close this thread.
