Johnson 110

I have a 1989 Johnson 110. I took my boat out yesturday and it would idle okay when sputter out and die unless i gave it some throttle. Then I would open it up, get the boat planed out for ~ 20 seconds then I could watch the RPM's drop quick and the motor would die. I have no idea whats going on.

Sounds fuel related. Check the fuel pump.

Thats on the motor correct, and not in the tanks or inline?

To check for a fuel related issue, when the rpms start to drop try squeezing the primer bulb and see if it starts to pick up again. If it does then you need to start troubleshooting.

Check fuel lines, fittings, does the primer bulb collapse when the condition arises? , look for fuel leaks around the fuel pump and carbs.

I would suggest you get a service manual for the motor if you are asking where the fuel pump is, but to answer your question, yes it is on the motor.

The primer bulb would feel empty when I was having issues. If I pumped it until it was hard it seemed to run okay, if I kept the RPM's low and in gear it seems to run fine, but when I got on it I could get it to plane, then it would lose power. I am 99% sure it's a fuel issue, but just don't know where to start. I just pulled the fuel filter which I know has not been replaced is who knows how long. Could this be part of the issue? More info the better.

Yeah your symptoms point to fuel. First I would check for air leaks in the fuel lines/connectors. If that don't cut it I think it be time to rebuild the carbs - - use the OMC manual & get carb kits. I have a pair of em. Is yours a SeaDrive?

Someone earlier said it could be the fuel pump, but I don't see a fuel pump replacement, it just shows a gasket set....The breather lines were pretty gummed up on the outside of the boat, maybe 10% it was clear before I cleaned it out. Where would/could be the most common air leak for the fuel? When I run it I do not see or smell fuel leaking anywhere.
