I have a 1989 Johnson Outboard, 110 hp. Being very new to boats and this one, had it for a week docked on a cottage. Last night I was forced to abort a retrieve due to a muddy rained out ramp , which I didnt find out till I was there and it was dark by the time I aborted. I took the boat back through the river, very weedy, 2 foot depth , sand bottom. Telltale hole was just spitting some... noticed after trolling speed out after few minutes. Got to dock, next morning went out to another ramp to pull it in and telltale barely was spitting any water. Anywa, I am assuming the obvious, sand in there, blockage on telltale etc etc, but does anyone have a picture or description to open it up and clean out debris and change the impellor ? It hasnt been done in 2 years from looking at past owners reciepts. No overheat alarm went off, luckily... I am assuming/hoping its all sand and needs to be cleaned and impellor changed. Thanks.

The first thing to do if you have not already is to clear any blockages in the tell tale. From the pee hole in the lower cover right back to the nipple on the engine.

With luck that's all that will be necessary for now.

Overhauling the pump will entail dropping the gear-case unit from the leg and to do that the shift rod will have to be disconnected. I think its all one piece, no joints to access. If that's so I disconnects at its top end.

You'll need a pump overhaul kit and a manual would be very advisable

Thanks.. Any images available for this? Does anyone know where to order parts for Johnsons on Canada, without the huge duty and shipping fees?

Water pump change is somewhat easy to do , at the same time you remove the L/U you can flush the cooling system. GET A BOOK before removeing the L/U if you have never done it before.

Two years is a long time for a water pump impeller, your lack of cooling water may not be sand plugging your system but rather the impeller blades breaking off in the water pump houseing.

They have kits here in iboats and another place I go is maxrules.com

Iam not sure about the duty tax but I wouldnt think it would be as much as a new power head for your motor. As for the high temp alarm DO NOT TRUST THE ALARM . MOST TIMES WHEN YOU HEAR THIS ALARM ITS TOO LATE!!!!!!!!

Thanks, I am searching for an oem book now... Do you know what parts need to be ordered to do all this other than the waterpump kit with impellor? Do I need any o rings handy, lube etc etc? Will try and pre order while waiting for the book since most parts take 2 weeks to Canada, cant seem to find a reasonable supplier here who isnt charging 3 times online prices.

Thanks

order a water pump kit. there should be a Canadian source, seeing BRP is a Canadian company.
