Just found another good looking boat in my price range. It's a 17' Glastron bass boat with a Johnsone 115 hp. The pictures of the boat look good, but no other info on this engine other than "starts easily, runs strong, power tilt." I will call tomorrow at a decent hour, but without knowing the year, anyone know anything about this engine? 2 stroke or 4, good/ bad etc etc...

Their asking $1800 for the whole package. I'll look at it in person tomorrow if I can.

boat was a 1975, needed lots of work. Engine compression was great, 120, and also believed to be 1975. ATF in the lower unit instead of oil, strange. Owner refused $1400 offer i made.

Re: Johnson 115 hp

the model years would be a great help but belive your are looking at an older 1980s- 1990s{ 90degree block }2-stroke.

Glastrons are well made boats but the condition it is in is every thing.

do more than look at it.

check for rot on the floors, stringers, bilge area ,& transom ( i would dig around with a flat head screwdriver in small out of the way places- if it is mushy then it is rotten) . check the lights, pumps ,gages, .
if you can do a compresion check- look at the lower unit oil for milky looking oil(water).if you are satisfied with every thing then you need to go on a sea trial for at least an hour with the seller (offer to buy gas) . let him start off showing you how everything works then you drive.
if the owner objects or makes excuses not to do this then keep looking.
also look at the trailer tires for dry rot, see if the lights work.

if thing check out it could be a very nice rig.:cool:good luck.

Re: Johnson 115 hp

gages and lights did not all work, soft spot on the floor near where the water drains, no bilge pump (or not to the knowledge of seller), trailer needed lights, best part of boat was motor believe it or not.... I will keep looking, he was firm at $1850 and I think he's nuts. I could be wrong, but better deals are out there....

I have that exact motor. I bought it on a sunbird neptune by OMC (now out of business). It is a 2 stroke. Mine runs great, and even better now that it had a tune up, compression checked, and linkeages adjusted properly.

Cheers

From your description, the motor was the only good thing about the whole setup. It screams project. If that's not what you want, run run run away.

ATF in the L/U sounds wierd. Don't know how that'd hold up.
