My 97 115 (J115gleuc) has been having fuel issues ( won't idle or run at speed unless bulb is pumped). Last time out the warning horn sounded a continous beep and no oil light came on, once when idling and once at speed. (oil tank was full) Shutting down and restart cleared the problem. The bulb and fuel line to motor are new, fuel filter on motor is clean, new Champion plugs and have replaced thermostat left side, as that bank never warmed up when testing on muffs. Had the boat 7 years with no issues. 2 weeks ago it would not run on the muffs without the bulb, My father came over to look at it several days later and it idled for 10 minutes without pumping. Now it's back to it's old tricks. Dad suspects fuel line blockage or tank vent. What do you think? Thanks for any help.

Re: Johnson 115 overheat warn and oil light

Thanks for the input! Is it possible for these fuel pumps to function when cold and then give out as the engine warms. I tested the pump yesterday by pulling a fuel line off the carb. It worked when first cranked as fuel was being pumped through the line attached and put into a bucket. Reattached the fuel line and cranked up. I had disassembled the bracket where the oil and fuel lines come into the cowling. There is a sight glass where you can see the fuel. Engine cranked right up, after idling for about 2 minutes, you could visually see the fuel start backing up towards the main fuel line coming from the tank. If my fuel pump is bad, is it possible to function when cold (see above test performed by unhooking fuel line at carb) and then crap out as temperatures rise? Thanks for any input, as I want to make sure it is the fuel pump before ordering the rebuild kit!

I had a similar problem and it drove me nuts leaving the helm while I had to pump the primer so the engine wouldn't stall out. In my case after two minutes of using the engine I'd lose fuel pressure. I bought a rebuild kit and it didn't have all the parts I needed. Long story short, I ended up buying another fuel pump and saving the rebuild kit. You might have to take the pump apart before you order to make sure the parts in the rebuild kit will leave you with a functional pump. My fuel pump was $90 at http://www.ishopmarine.com/ It's a awesome site for buying parts cheap. They have good exploding view diagrams to show you all the parts.
