Good afternoon everybody. Working on a Johnson 115 V4 2 stroke that I recently got up and running with help from this forum. Runs well. When on the water it runs great then the alarm starts sounding continuously then engine loses almost all power. Turn the key off then restart immediately and the engine once again has power for a little while until you go to give higher throttle. The VRO is no longer used and the tank is gone and just 50:1 is added to the tank. Engine doesn't seem to be overheating and the upper tube sends out a good continuous stream of water. the tack harness from the control is not connected to anything since it doesn't have a tack. But I'm wondering if one or more of those 3 wires need to be connected somewhere. Also is it normal for these to lose power when the alarm sounds?

I use to have a mariner that had an oil injection system. Well, my sensor went bad and started beeping for low oil (BEEP, BEEP, BEEP .. not a continuous tone) even though the oil tank was full and functional. So what did I do? I took off the fuse for the sensor and just reminded myself to check for oil everyday. Two years later I forgot to check my oil one day and was out boating all day long and sure enough I let the oil tank get bone dry and watched my motor tear itself apart. Lesson here is dont ignore or bypass alarms. Buy the manual so you have it on hand for future troubleshooting and don't be cheap or lazy like I was.

Yes, it will loose power during an over heat as the pistons get hot and start dragging in the cylinders...even though you have good water from the tell-tale doesn't mean your cooling the motor properly. Get an infrared thermometer and check the heads at each cylinder while running on muffs. Don't continue to run this motor this way as you will cause extensive damage if you haven't already!
