I turn the key and the starter will spin but the bendix won't rise up to the fly wheel. Plenty of power going to it. Suggestions?

I'm ready to pull it off the motor and have it rebuilt but wanted to check with the authorities first.

Thanks all-

Bill,

Two things.

1. With the ignition OFF, walk the starter gear up the shaft, with your fingers. It will only go one way. Once up, lubricate it-lightly, with some WD-40 or similar product.

2. Remove (with battery DISCONNECTED) the negative battery terminal on the engine block. Clean it, the bolt and everything. Reinstall.

I had the same problem with my starter. I sprayed some T9 lubricant on the bendix shaft. I managed to prop the bendix up with a screwdriver once I had the bendix on the flywheel I started the motor while my father sprayed the starter. It has worked well since lubricating.

I agree with DJ. Mine did the same thing. There might be a bit of old "goop" on the shaft. Just clean and lightly lube and it will be fine.
