I just changed the waterpump this spring on my 115hp V4 Johnson (mod:TJ115TLEND - s/n:G03065149) because it would overheat at the dock, but not running on a hose. (the problem happened last year but I couldn't repair it until now -moved,etc.) Now it overheats on the hose after idling for about 10 minutes. Water comes out the telltale fine.

I noticed there was water leaking from above the lower unit near the lower mounts, is this normal? (links to pictures included)

After reading some posts, and seeing this leak, I'm wondering if I messed up the installation of the waterpump (even tho I followed the manual religiously) or didn't get the watertube lined up correctly when reattaching the l/u.

I'll be changing the t-stats anyway, just wanna know if the leak is something to be concerned about or if this could contibute to the overheating.

Also, Is this this a "looper" or a "crossover"?

Thanks!

http://www.imagehosting.us/?id=490411&type=viewpic

http://www.imagehosting.us/?id=490410&type=viewpic

I don't think my 90 leaks from those places, but I don't run mine on the muffs much at all. My neighbor gets upset. The t-stats could be the cause of your overheating. Your motor is a "crossflow".

Hopefully someone else will comment on the leaks. The boards are full of new posters and the regulars are out enjoying their boats.

In the second picture, look at the water coming out of the drain hole, lower, and to the left of where you are looking. The engine has a wet sleeve exhaust. That drainage is normal. If you are not sure about the water tube, check it again. A stuck thermostat, or exhaust cover leak could give you an over-heat. If you have a good strong tell-tale, your water tube connection should be OK, Unless you snagged the water tube grommet with the tube, and are restricting the flow. A leaking head gasket will also cause an over-heat.

Thanks for the quick responses!
It does have have a strong telltale so for right now I'll assume I didn't screw up that connection and concentrate on troubleshooting the t-stats, exhaust cover, etc.
I asked about the looper/crossover because I saw in some posts about checking the deflectors. I couldn't find anything about them in my manual.

Thanks again! This site is great, so much more information than just the manual.

Were both heads hot? Unusual for both thermostats to stick. Anyway, you can check by pulling one of the hoses leading from a head to the thermostat block, then run the motor. This test bypasses the thermostat.

Plenty of flow from that hose, and the head on that side cools off? OK - your thermostat on that side is sticking.

The thermostats are a BEAR to change on that motor. Search the archives here for plenty of commentary.

ledgefinder - Thanks for the reply! -

The right side is the one getting hot. I found this by running the motor til the temp alarm sounded...turned off the motor, then disconnected the wire for the temp sensor on each side to see which one was activating the alarm.
Then I tried what you said about disconnecting the hose on that side. Water is flowing good, so it must be that t-stat. There was a lot of "junk" in there. Kinda like gritty sandy calcium deposit type stuff. I'll have to flush that out somehow.
I ordered a whole t-stat kit (should be here tomorrow) might as well change 'em both out since I'm in there.

Thanks again.
