Johnson 135 question

I wanted to know how the pistons and cylinders looked after three years operation in saltwater, after using eleven dollar synthetic all that time.

I removed the head on one bank.

The two cyl's walls looked perfect, no vertical scuff lines at all, and the crosshatch lines clearly visible.

The piston heads had about .030 carbon build up.

The inside water walls looked very clean and free of buildup.

The only negative was very small corrosion pits near the outer edge of the surface of the aluminum cyl. wall.

I don't know if bothering with the other side will do anything to slow down the corrosion.

Questions:

Do I bother with the other side?

Is there a best brand replacement gasket?

Thanks

Re: Johnson 135 question

Hi Henry

Sounds like the engine has had some top notch PM over the three years. Regular decarbing will take care of the carbon build up on the pistons. Not a bunch you can do about the corrosion pits. Just remember to flush her out with fresh water after a day on salt. Even us fresh water boys get the "pits". Do compression test on the other side and if they read good, I wouldn't open it up. Just an opinion on head gaskets, I perfer OEM myself but after markets will usually work just fine. Good Luck and keep up the preventive maint. :D

Re: Johnson 135 question

The motor sits at a saltwater slip all the time. Too difficult to use muffs. Never gets a freshwater flush. Wish I knew a way.

There is a way, provided you have a fresh water source to reach the boat. the negines can be fitted with flushing ports and pulse units that take the place of a running engine to flush it.
I'll look for the link, and post it ere when i find it.
Ok here is one (not the one I was looking for, but close.
The one I'm trying to find is used by the NAVY,on thier outboards, and smaller I/O's , and is called pulsejet or something..(see, if I could remember the name,I could web search it)

FLUSH KIT
