Johnson 140 Looper constant alarm

Hi Guys:

I'll try and make this as simple as possible. I have read all the post on the subject I can find and still have a constant alarm on my 89 engine. I've unplugged the VRO, oil tank lead and temp leads and still get battery voltage on the alarm circuit. I say battery voltage cause the darn buzzer melted.

This engine has served me great for more than five years. I am an aircraft mechanic and do all the annual maint. stuff. I have good water flow, and once the thermostats were cleaned, cool running. The motor runs great and I can't find anything wrong, but she is still not happy and sounds a constant alarm.

The only time the alarm ever activated prior to this issue was an over temp due to weeds. This also shut down two cylinders as it is supposed to do. After the obstruction was cleared, she cooled down and ran fine.

I have checked all the alarm leads and can find no shorts to ground. I'm at a loss. Any ideas. HELP! This thing is driving me nuts.

BTW - when the motor overheats it won't shut any cylinders down it simply limits the rpm to about 2800.

You should have batt. voltage at the alarm all the time
the circuit for the alarm is triggerred buy grounding the sensor
unplug the big red connector at the engine
if the alarm continues, you have a short to ground in the harness
on the boat side.
if it stops then the short is in side the engine cowl area

I think it was a two wire. I tossed it some months ago cause it was toast, really. I could be wrong, but I only have one lead from the three pin amp connector coming out of the remote control that goes to the buzzer, the purple one. That to ground gives me battery voltage, so with connected to a buzzer or light...well, you know.

Sorry about that shutting down cylinders thing, that was from an old Honda manual (motorcycle).

BTW this is an old remote and I don't have a wiring diagram for it. It was new old stock when I swapped engines and just plugged it in. If I remember correctly, I had to splice the harness for the pos. oil tank lead.

That's good info. Thanks, Now I just have to figure out which wire is the alarm signal (ground). The manual I have says the tan wire and I don't have a tan wire...or at least one that looks tan to my 60 something eyes.

Anybody have diagram for the OMC outboard remotes?

OK, I rang out all leads and it appears that the alarm (tan lead) was pinched in the clam shell of the remote. Now there is no short to ground anywhere in the alarm system. However, after some retrospect, I had a 3 wire sounder.
So when I hooked up the 2 wine, it did not matter. I got an alarm constantly.

Guess I am going o have to find a three wine sounder for this 1980s remote.

First check the wiring again if you have the three lead horn.

There should be two spade connectors and one black wire with a circular clip.

The circular clip goes to the small M black ground connector on the ignition switch.

The positive spade terminal should have a + sign on the side of the horn closest to it. If the + sign is gone, it will be the connector to the left if the two spade connectors are pointed upwards facing you. The purple wire from the ignition switch should be connected there.

The right spade connector is for the tan wire.

Any other wiring array will fail to perform properly.

hey can you tell me where to find that alarm. I've jumped my Tan wire to ground with the key in the on position and no alarm. Is the Alarm located on the motor or at the controls and if so where bouts?

The alarm sounder (buzzer) can be located under your instrument console on some applications. On mine, it is located inside the engine remote control.

The OMC side mount remote is held together by three recessed screws on the back side. The sounder on these types are just below the ignition switch.

Not sure what kind of remote you have, so this is general information that I have picked up over the past five years dealing with replacing parts in my old remote. Here's a link to a good diagram that one of the guys posted from Bill Kelly. If the link does not work, copy and paste it.

I do have a three wire alarm and the pic you posted is compatible but I don't think that one will fit in my remote. In fact the original round type barely fits. I can get the original PN 585992 locally. My question is this; if I wire it correctly, as you discribed, can I mount the sounder inside the console behind the remote control?

The kit has wiring instructions for mounting it inside or outside of the remote.

OK, here's the conundrum. Bought a new alarm module. Installed it as indicated. I have battery voltage on the purple wire to the + terminal, tan wine to the other spade connector and the black ring connector to the flush "M" connector on the ignition switch. When I short the tan connector at the temp. sensor on the engine, I should get an alarm. Nothing. Not a chirp, beep on anything.

I have previously verified that circuit when I found the short to ground in the remote, so I know it is good. I tested from the remote to the large red connector and from the engine side all the way through. Now I really am at a loss. All connectors verified and checked, but still no alarm. Could I possible have a bad alarm module? It was new OMC.

You can only test the wiring by that method and you would ground the harness end of the disconnected tan wire, not the engine end. The ignition switch must be in run or start position.

The temperature switch is just on or off; the only way to test it is to take it out and heat it to 203 degrees +/- so that it closes. The cover is plastic, so use a 6 point 5/8 wrench, or you may damage it. Your ohmmeter will register when the switch closes. You need to use oil to heat it and a thermometer to check the temperature of the oil.

Thanks. I'll unplug the remote to engine connector and ground the alarm on the remote side. That should give me an alarm if I understand your instructions.

Darn, I have fewer pains trouble shooting an engine compartment fire alarm on a King Air 200 than on this OMC.

Well, still no luck with the alarm. I again verified the continuity of the alarm lead from the remote end of the harness plug, turned the ignition on and grounded that lug on the remote side. Nothing. I even tried grounding the alarm spade on the module and got nothing. Is there any other way to test the module itself or is that something the dealer can do?

Well guys, thanks for all your help. After finding the original cause (pinched wire in the remote) for the constant alarm, purchasing and installing a new alarm module as you can see by my previous post....nothing. No alarm at all, not even a beep at ignition turn on. Finally took the module back to the dealer and she was kind enough to give me another to test with and it worked just fine.

After all the hassle, I had a bad module right out of the box. The dealer warrantied the part and now my 140 is a happy motor.
