I have a johnson 140 V$ lower unit making noises when I am running open . please advise on what to do. I just had the top rebuilt, and I have only 2 hours left on the break in time. is it more cost effective to just go get a lower unit from a boat yard most are going from $250-300. what do I look for when I purchase one of these? or should I pay someone to drop it and see if maybe it only needs a gear or something little . Ihave been told to rebuild one is around $1000 which I dont have to spend at this time. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated, If I would rebuild it my self How much are the rebuild kits ?

if you buy a used one you need to check to see if the fluid has water in it, what kind of shape the overall appearance is (no bent or broken skegs nor cracks in case..even repaired cracks), check the length of the shaft, put a prop on it and spin it to see fi the shaft is bent, and it would be great if you could do a pressure test to check the seals.............otherwise you are taking the sellers word that its a good lu.

rebuilds require experience and special tools.

you can also buy newly rebuilt lu's.

have you changed or checked the fluid level?

does it have water in it?

the $300 way seems better to me.................around my area they go from $350-$600. $350 usually is a good lu but has cosmetic damage ie bent or broken skeg, or bad paint job, etc...
