Re: johnson 140 v4 vro pump rebuildable ?

I was told no when mine started to give trouble. I changed to a premix pump from a 1982 140hp and all is well.
What makes you think it is the fuel pump ????

Re: johnson 140 v4 vro pump rebuildable ?

kennyfam : the reason i think it is the fuel pump is the way it was acting it would run ok for a minute or two then it would cut out pumping the primer it would pick up again then after a couple of those the oil warning beep (everyother beep)would come on it would still be runing ok though ,, i would shut it down wait for a bit acould do it all over again ,, made for a long run home that day ,, i was low on oil that day but not out ..... it did't matter if going fast or slow same thing happens ..at home and full of oil i was trouble shoting at home same thing .. i took a spair piece of hose and ran it off the gas oil out and when sqeezing the primer gas comes out,, fire it up and nothing while it's running .. i had replaced this pump 3-4 years ago because simlar problem and it had been fine tell the other day when this started... ,,, it's a 1985 140 v4 on an 16.5 ebbtide alot of fun when running any help would be greatlly appercated thanks

Re: johnson 140 v4 vro pump rebuildable ?

Well, I had trouble with mine on the first day of vacation in July. Pumping the bulb kept it running. I changed it out for a 1982 premix pump and disconnected the oil alarms. Used the same pulse line as the VRO and blocked off the oil feed line. Took off the oil tank. Pump has 3 connections. Mixed fuel in, mixed fuel to carbs and pulse line.
Mine is a 1985 140hp Johnson V4 Looper.
As I have said in many previous posts. Without the VRO in place and premixing I know that if there is gas getting through then so is the lubrication.
I had very similar symptoms as you are experiencing.
VRO pump replacement was $508. Premix pump under $100, aftermarket even cheaper. I used the genuine OMC pump.
Good Luck and let us all know.

Re: johnson 140 v4 vro pump rebuildable ?

The oil side of the vro pump is not rebuildable. There is a rebuild kit for the gas side which costs $91.00. You can see a picture of what's available in this kit at maxrules.com. Be advised though that there have been cases where this kit has been put into a vro fuel pump with no improvement. There are check valves and other things in the fuel pump which are not replaced by the kit.

Before replacing your pump again, you might want to do a compression test of your engine to see its condition. You may be getting leaks past the rings which is reducing your vacuum pulse which is necessary to run your fuel pump.

If your vacuum pulse is good, kennyfam's idea of a non-vro pulse pump is an inexpensive solution for engines of 140hp or less. See his thread, which I think is titled something like: I'm a premixer now.

Re: johnson 140 v4 vro pump rebuildable ?

jayboid,
thank you for your in put ,, and doing a comprestion check sounds like a good idea .. after reading more about stuff lastnight about the way vro pumps work i see where your going .. i have never done a comprestion check on this motor so who knows ,, although it seems to run good when it run's .. my 16.5 ebbtide does about 45-47 all out but most of the time i cruse around 30 with gas prices the way they ... i was also reading some about what ethinol gas can do lastnight too.. like my antisifin valve on the tank i haven't checked that yet either .. i just have a real hard time thinking that a pump could go bad in 3-4 years but i'm kinda new to this outboard stuff ,, if it was a v8 no problem but this stuff is kinda weird lol ,, i'll put compresstion check on my list of thing to try the next time i get out to work on it .. thanks alot
