I am tring to fix my brothers boat motor which is the following:

Johnson 15
Model:CJ15RCDE
Serial:R7312193

Last season he had problems starting it and I decided we better fix it befor we go out this season. Compression is about 95 on both cylinders and appears to hold, spark also appears to be fine. I pulled off the carb and the float is an old coark one and the jet and posr look worn. Has any one had starting experince this engine. Thanks in advance.

Re: Johnson 15 help!

buy a carb rebuild kit with the plasctic float. the cork one get saturated. soak the carb over night, don't just spray it. blow out with compressed air. us a small wire and run thru the orafices, and blow out again. then rebuild. to set the high and low speed adjustments , use the red search at the top of the page. search for setting low speed idle, its all there.

Re: Johnson 15 help!

Hey guys do you know of any good places online for the carb kit i need? Since you all were so good I won't mind supporting a site that you all deal with. I am from Ontario Canada. I am also tring to figure out the carb model. there are a bunch of different numbers on it . The tag on the carb says 395912 mx 22dl with a M stamped on it. the carb has a stamp on it 388275 and the bowl has 330881 stamped on it. Thanks in advance.

Re: Johnson 15 help!

What you want to do is get the OEM kit from any John/Rude Patrick. The kit you want is PN 398453. It will have a new float. Havn't seen any after market kits that do. Set ya' back about $20.

It's strange that you found a cork float in that carb. 86's had the "pastic" floats from the factory. Strange.

Yeah, I always thought it was weird when I would find an old cork float in a newer model, that's how some of them are coming right from the kit these days though!

Blow the carb out and soak like said before and it should be fine.

WOW runs great guys... rebuilt the carb ... 1 pull it starts... just need to get it on the water and adjust the high throttle on it ... I was wonderng what the mix ratio is tho... The marina we were at last year only had 50:1 and the motor says tight on it 100:1 ... recommendations!

Thanks again

Re: Johnson 15 help!

Use 50:1 Pat....disregard the 100:1.

No high end adjustment on it Pat, just low end needle. Start with 1 1/2 turn out from gently seated. Warm the engine up in gear and bring it down to idle for needle adjustment. Make your adjustments in 1/8 turn increments alowing 15sec for engine response. Sometimes you will hear the engine respond right away so don't be surprised.

Yes there is Pat....search up Ken Cook Co. or ishopmarine. Both sell reprints of the original service manuals. You'll need the model number.

Re: Johnson 15 help!

Evening everyone,

Well all was well till this morning... now the waterpump is only working itermittent... Looking like it is DEFINATLY time to get my hands on a manual. tashasdaddy thanks for the ebay link unfortunatley they only want US bidders and I am in Canada. I check some other links but I am noticing the books are like 1.5hp to 150hp... is this the way they are in the marine industry? Can I get one specific to this engine I have. I want to pull this bottom end off to look at the pump but I do not know what is involved... I had another Idea which was if anyone sold a CD manual I know they are around for automotive just not sure about marine... Thanks again

Re: Johnson 15 help!

have you seen this article/link about these motors under the FAQ section of the main forum page?
http://www.wisnersinc.com/Fishing Info/OMC/9.9 OMC info.htm

you really want to look at it... TONS of info

I thought the water pump on mine was OK until I changed the impeller as preventative measure.... way more water flow at idle when I put the new one in, even though the old one "looked OK".

Re: Johnson 15 help!

MANY MANY THANKS.... to everyone who helped thank you... I pulled the lower end off the motor and found that the waterpump seal had come out... no seal no pump... Why? Well my thought is that it was stored with out having the bottom end oil changed, becasue when it was drained I found alot of water in it... my thought was that over the winter this water would have been enought to pop the seal out when the water froze. The shaft had heavey wear but I put an new seal in alonl with a new impeller, since I had t out... and it pumps LOTS of water. Startign is a dream now that I have rebuilt the Carb... 1 or 2 pulls from cold start almost dont need the choke... The high idel thing I was talking about I found in the book I think it was the cam roller adjustment I was playing with on the carb so I have to rest it.

So if you guys are ever in Ontario Canada email me and we will do some fishing.

Patrick
