Hello. I have J15RLCUD S#E6234747, I believe about 1986/87. Have cleaned carb., replaced fuel pump/filter, new primer bulb on gas hose. Motor is extremely hard to cold start, takes about 20-30 pulls and much squeezing of primer bulb. Once it starts the first time will re-start first pull all day long. Motor runs perfectly, idles way down, plenty of power on acceleration, etc. Problem is just that 1st start. <br /><br />Any suggestions appreciated. I'm out of ideas and expetives.

Re: Johnson 15 HP fuel problem

Bill, I have a '86 15 Evinrude that had the same problem, so I put in a carb kit etc, didn't seem to help much. Was told then that the air/fuel ratio was too lean. I turned the low-speed adjustment counter-clockwise a 1/4-1/2 turn and also increased the idle speed about a 100 rpms. Now she starts up great. It seemed that the idle was a little high in the test tank, but I tried her on the boat in the river and it was great. She idles down and runs perfect. Hope this helps you.<br />Knob<br />"a boat in the water is not a problem, water in the boat, however, IS !..

Everyone tells me the #1 reason for hard starting is a lean condition...
