I am new this forum. Hoping for some help. I have a 1986 johnson 150 vro.
My problem is after getting on plane for about 5 to 10 min. It dieds like you pulled the kill switch. Just dead in the water. But it will start right back up and go again. It may not quite for the next three or four times, then it will do it again. It does it just on plane or Wot. Never dies at idle. Any help would be great. Thanks

There are no fuel leaks or alarms. There is no warning at all. It just dies.

Re: Johnson 150 dies

take a good look inside your fuel tank and see if there is anything floating at the bottom inside the tank that could stop up your pick up tube.

i know it sounds far fetched and the first time i read it i thought wow bet that doesnt happen very often but ive read it a few times......

is your primer bulb going flat when this happens?

do you have to wait any amount of time before she fire back up or does she just start back?

have you traced the wires to the kill switch and ign switch to make sure none are grounding?

fuel filter or water seperator clear?

Have checked both fuel tanks, lines, all connections. Primer bulb is OK. Starts right back up and takes right off. fuel filter is clean. Have checked all wiring except in the control box. have not taken it apart yet. Maybe this weekend.

so you dont have to pump the primer bulb to restart? or choke it?

sounds like a loose/bad connected wire coming loose from vibration.

Re: Johnson 150 dies

I am having the same problem going on right now, except I do have an alarm.
It started out that the motor would just die after going full throttle for about 5-10 min, but would run just fine under half throttle.
When the motor dies a continous alarm will sound, but after sitting about 3-5 mins. I could do an ignition reset and the alarm would go away and the motor would start right back up and I could go full throttle again but the same thing would happen again after a short time.
I stopped at the repair place on the way home from the lake and he tells me that it was an overheat alarm and not fuel. Left it there for them to look at got a call to tell me that it was a fuel restriction, replaced all hoses, filters and clamps.
Ran it again and same thing happened at about 5-10 mins. full throttle.checked fuel filter and no fuel in bowl.l Returned to repair place and had the VRO pump replaced with two manual pumps, had lines checked from gas tank to make sure there was no restrictions. Ran it again this afternoon and same thing happened at same time but did have fuel in bowl this time, so it is back to the repair place first thing in the morning .

Re: Johnson 150 dies

I just came off the lake with the boat mechanic, engine did the same thing. He checked temp. and it was fine 125-130, disconnected the temp sensor and the alarm. Boat started right up again but was rough beyond 1/4 throttle, he said that the S.T.O.P circuit was still activated, causing that.
His solution was to replace the pack, which he is in the process of doing now, will give more updates after I try it again, may be a couple of days.
