Cheers,

I recently Bought a Johnson 150 Gt Model# J150st
Serial #J6132092

This motor used to have a VRO but is set up to run 50:1 premix

The motor starts No problem but seems to want to flood out if at idle for a period of time ..
First time on the water with it the motor just didnt want to go was sluggish and wouldnt get out of the hole just bogged..pulled back to about half throttle and ran it there for a few and it slowly started picking up... next thing you know it caught and ran like a scalded dog... but after slowing and trying to take off again same thing..

today second time on water ...couldnt get it to go at all ..started fine and put putted but when giving throttle ..nothing but bogggg and wanting to flood out...went through almoast 12 gallons of fuel to get to fishing hole and back pushing water like a barge (Disgusted)

I havent the slightest clue about boat motors... I did notice what appeared to be a peice of magnet on top of one of the cylinders ...I then peared under the flywheel and noticed a small section maybe 2 inches of magnet missing....could this be the problem...

Any help with this would be of great help....I also have a Evinrude 150 which i was told had bad compression ...hence could be used for parts...

I thought maybe the carbs where messed up but i dont even know where to start....Did buy a repair manual before i posted here but wont recieve it till 4- 5 days from now..

Please advise.
Thank you for you time!!

Carl

Welcome aboard iboats Habit....

First....don't run the engine until you have a wrench take a look at the flywheel. You may have lost one of the magnets that fire the cylinders (so to speak). This maybe your whole problem or part of it. Get the flywheel taken care of first and make sure the engine has a good spark on all cylinders. The spark on each cylinder should jump a 1/2" gap with a hot white spark. This should be your firt step. Then run the engine and see what happens.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Well had a tech look at it today and no doubt the flywheel magnets where part of the problem.
Luckly he had one in his shop cost 240.00

Also said my fuel side of the VRO is going out.
I also have a 1980 model evinrude with the 2 fuel pumps on them that we can use and do away with that VRO completely.
Also he stated my powerhead gasket needed to be replaced.
So needless to say ive got my work cut out for me....hopefully can get it going in a month or so..
Thanks for the advise!!
Carl

Thanks for the git back Carl....nice to know what's up with these critters. You gonna do the job yer self or let the wrench do it?

Gonna pay him to do it but told him I would help out....I would like to know more about these things and wouldnt mind working and paying for it .....He said he would charge me about 250.00 to redo the powerhead lower gasket and install fuel pumps ...
I guess thats not that bad although Seems like i just keep pouring the money in...hopefully it will stop at this and I can actually enjoy some nice qaulity fishing time instead of fighting a motor.
(Crosses fingers)

Why not order and OEM service manual Carl and read up on this stuff. You can save yerself several bucks in minor stuff and some major stuff too. You can get the manuals at the local dealership. Probably have to order it.

Anyways....hope ya' catch a ton a' fish this year. Keep in touch.

Re: Johnson 150 GT 1985

Well to update this post--

I did finally get it to the tech and had him change the powerhead gasket , and boy am I glad i had him do it...

Seems whoever owned it before me ran the motor in saltwater and i was amazed at what kind of mess that salt can create ...rung off 2 bolts and had to cut one head off and take the rest of the bolt out once it was apart.

I changed the VRO pump over to the old style vaccum pumps myself added some new plugs .premixed 50:1 and am pleased to say after 4 great fishing trips (what turned out to be great fishing trips FISH ON!!!) the motor has preformed flawlessly.

*Crossed fingers while knocking on wood*
:p

Ohh and I did pick up a manual. thanks for the insight
