Johnson 150 Jumping out of reverse gear?

My 87 Johnson 150 GT runs flawlessly in forward, shifting, etc.

the only issue is that it has a tendency to make a clunking sound like it is falling out of the reverse gear and then slamming back in.

I assume someone else has had this issue, so I am asking to see if I can get an idea on where to start troubleshooting and repair.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

You just need to adjust your shift cable and soon, it doesn't take much clunking to wind up with an expensive repair.
pop your hood and there should be a knurled knob at the end of the shift cable inside the engine housing, loosen the nut and tab on top of it to make it easier to turn.
Move the throttle and figure out which way it moves to reverse and adjust it more that way, that should take care of it.
