Was trolling and suddenly heard the horn for a blast engine shut off and had whit smoke. The engine casing was hot. Waited a few minutes tried restarting and it started fine and was no longer hot. Had plenty of oil and the pisser is running strong. The RPM guage speedomiter and the trim guages no longer work.

It was suggested that it might be an electrical charging issue. Also now boat won't go more than 10 mph like the SLOW state is in place.

Any suggestions on what the issue was/is? Also how do I get it out of slow? Is there a computer chip to re-sett?

Thanks

Gib

Welcome!

It would help greatly if you could post the model number so we can "see" which 150 you have. That will help us help you go in the right direction. Since you talk about S.L.O.W. it leads us to believe you have a late model motor, probably a 60 degree. But I've been wrong before. Today even. Ask my wife.

Re: Johnson 150 overheat situation

Thanks for the advice solittle....

I did try the search function multiple searches and I definately see where that feature has tremendous value. Didn't get the same exact result you did, but got some similiar stuff.

Dhadley you're right I thought I listed the year ut didn't. It's a 1996 2 stroke 150 Johnson. Am curious how to reset the SLOW system. shutting it off and restarting isn't the solution as its now been two days. Also has anyone experienced an electrical malfunction with an overheat? And do guages typically get fried or fuse blown in this type of situation?

Re: Johnson 150 overheat situation

Thanks for the help! Today after three days it is no longer in SLOW - not sure why. The speedometer still works and as it turns out, I thought it didn't cause it wouldn't go fast enough to register. Still the RPM guage and the trim guage aren't working. My guess is that it is electrical as someone suggested at the marina. My voltage guage registers at 16 while driving at 20 mph or so and at 14 while going slow. This seems excessive. Anyone think it will cuase a r-occurance and is the culprit?

thanks

Gib

check the voltage with a digital voltmeter. dash meters, like the onew we probably most have, are cheap indicators but not necessarily accurate.
