johnson 150 runs great in driveway, take it to lake just wont run

got 79 johnson 150 v6 that runs great in drive way but that dont get me fishing lol. i drop in the water and then all my troubles begin. had starting wont idle, put in gear and dies. can anyone help. would be great if i could find a wire and fuel diag for it.

I'd start with a shop manual. In there, you'll not only find wiring diagrams but a section or sections (depending on which manual you get) on trouble shooting.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

I'm having the exact same problem with my 1994 120 Johnson. My ignition and my carbs are functioning properly. The only difference between running on ears in the driveway and running at the lake is exhaust backpressure. I think my problem is a crankcase airleak. I pulled the powerhead yesterday and the base gasket was blown out between the exhaust and the rear water passages. I'm going to split the case and reseal it and see what happens. Walker

i've got the same problem with my 1980 v6 200hp johnson, wouldn't want to take it out in the water either. sounds great on land though. i've started with checking fuel, could be bad gas if it sat for awhile, my next step is checking the carbs. i've got a manual that covers 50-235 1973-1987 evinrude/johnsons. let us know how it works out walker. mcnally34@comcast.net

Do a compression test first.

Okay, good compression (120-125 all cylinders), split the cases today and found no leaks but there was a lot of raw fuel in the bottom of the case. This evening or tomorrow I'll check the pump diaphram and check valves. It too darn hot to do it now. Walker

Got it all back together, replaced vro pump with a standard fuel pump. Still won't start in the water. Gonna try some other things this afternoon.

cleaned my carbs put new plugs in, gona get diffent tank and hook up and see what it does with new tank and fuel might be this weekend before i know anymore.<br />walker let me know how yours turns out

Spark test, should jump a 7/16 gap at cranking rpms, check diode in power pack, or disconnect black/yellow wire between the 2 packs. If the pack diode is bad, can be replaced with radio shack diode externaly in black/yellow wire.

I got it. It was my choke. It was not pumping any gas. After everything I did it still wouldn't start in water so I pulled a choke line and now fuel was being pumped. I could hear the choke solenoid but it wasn't pumping fuel. replaced it with another choke I had and walaa, it started and runs fine. Why it would start on ears without a choke, I have no idea. I'm still having problems with the choke but I got her started and with new plugs and bumped the timing at idle a hair and she just purrs. i don't think the choke is getting enough fuel thru the line to it. I'll figure it out. Walker
