Have someone go with you and when the engine acts up, have them squeeze the primer bulb. You can also push in on the key to give it a little extra fuel. If the engine takes off again, you still have a fuel problem. You said compression is good. Give us some numbers. Does the overheat warning horn chirp when you first turn the key on. If not, its not working and you may indeed be overheating. Just because you see a stream from the tell tale does not mean the engine is running at normal temp. You never did tell us if the water pump or thermostat has been replaced. Since you had the carbs off you should also do a link&sync. You need a service manual for that as the procedure is very long and specific to your engine.

Engine off, have someone advance the throttle slowly to WOT...rotate the flywheel clockwise as it shifts into forward, to mesh the gears.

Observe whether the timer base moves smoothly through it's full range of motion, without sticking. Timer base is on the starboard side under the flywheel, linked to the throttle. It'll hit its stop before you get to full throttle.

Also observe the throttle plates, make sure they are parallel and arrive at horizontal plane but not past at WOT.

Examine all the wires leading from the stator to powerpacks and packs to coils. Look for burned, chafing, missing insulation, loose connections, check all the ground wires (attached to powerhead) for corrosion.

Did ya soak those carbs overnight in carb cleaner?
