would that motor be a pain to convert to short if i decided to go that route? i assumed it was factory ES because of the particular location of the start button on that motor. course then again i trusted it being a short shaft becuase the seller said so.

Hopefully it's the right length. After $900, I wouldn't be happy replacing the driveshaft.

Just out of curiosity, if converting from a 20" to 15" ... would you have to also replace the water tube and/or the shift rod?

Essentially, yes, although the water tube can be cut to length. The shift rod depends on the model of engine. The driveshaft....always.

Somewhat a pain, yes. The easiest way is to have a complete lower unit with driveshaft, water tube, and shiftrod for the short version. On a 1999, that's not going to be too easy to find, unless you find someone who wants to go the other way and you can swap.

I wouldn't stress over it at this point. Wait until you find out if it's a short shaft. Most sellers know the difference, and it's immediately obvious when looking at the outboard. It either has the 5" extension or it does not.

Heck, this could have been a swap in the dealership where it was sold originally. Someone came in with the cash for an electric start short shaft and all they had in stock was a long shaft rope start. The mechanic in the back could do the swap pretty quickly, and the parts may have been on hand.

Go measure it. From where the transom mount rests on the transom to the anti-ventilation plate will be between 15-16" for a short shaft. If it's over 19", then it's a long shaft.

Also, the short shaft will have a simple smooth line from the top of the engine to the lower unit. The long shaft has a 5" piece between the two.

ok. got home and measured and its the same as my other short shaft motor and no sign of an expansion plate. so i guess someone else did the shortening work. whew. lol.
pic of my johnson
Anyway for anyone that may need the info:
after a little bit or research it looks like all those long shaft model Johnsons of 1999 era have an extension kit on them which has a drive shaft, link rod, water tube 5" extension and the expansion plate and screws. Reverse engineering that it looks like all that is needed is the shaft, possible link rod ( may be able to cut and renotch the long one) and the grommet that sits on top of the water tube, looks like a differnt part number for the 20 inch grommet which i assume fits the extension tube.
Parts 0341590 Drive shaft ($140.00 approx)
0318992 shift rod ($16.00 approx)
0327035 water tube grommet ($3.00)
This is all just an educated guess by looking at the parts breakdown of the long and short models. Anyone with deep knowledge of this particular model would probably know a lot better then me. but i hope this bit of info helps someone else out sometime. for less then the cost of a jack plate it looks like this motor can be shortened.

Also something to think about - if you had to convert to short shaft - then the old longshaft parts certainly have value to sell on ebay.

Easy to confirm the actual shaft length ... measure from the inside bottom of bracket (the part that sits on the transom) to the cavitation plate. 15" is short shaft, 20" is long.

If this is a saltwater motor, I would not get to excited over a $900 price. Salt does a fair bit of damage over 10 years.

I wouldn't bother at all if the shaft length isn't right.
